I don't think most sxe'ers cut themselves off from hardline, it was more the Hardline movement which cut itself off from straight edge. They were frustrated by the apolitical attitude of most people in the scene.
You can criticize Hardline for its adherence to certain religious ideas which embrace patriarchical world views. But to simply call it a group of people who were violent against people drinking and using drugs is a total misconception of what Hardline was.

In USA mainly some of the Straight Edge went to extreme and under the name of Hard Line started to use violence against the drunked people. Most of the Straight Edge movement cut off themselves from those intolerant idiots.
For me being Straight Edge is just a being sober Punk who one day realised that if i would like to be more efficient in creating good things and in the fight with the system, would be better that i would free myself from any addictions especially those which supporting the system and make me aggressive and dependent. Alcohol that's great weapon in the hands of government's.
By the way how many people are killed by alcohol ? How many people are killed by aggression after drinking ? How much violence within families ?
This video it's a usual main stream propaganda because sober punks are even more dangerous than drunked.
