ma 21 Crea A'dam: Op naar de Volgende Crisis?
Real World Economics/CREA - 17.12.2009 13:33

Voertaal is Engels.

Straight Towards the Next Crisis?
Monday December 21
20:00
Language: English

Is the financial crisis past, or are we in the eye of the storm with the worst maybe still to come? And what reactions to the crisis have there been during the past year from movements, trade unions and academics? At the end of the year Real World Economics takes the opportunity to look back at the financial crisis during 2009, and try to predict some events in the coming year. In our program in November 2008 economists Howard Nicholas and Rodrigo Fernandez explained the background of the crisis and did some frightening predictions. Now Rodrigo Fernandez (promovendus UvA/AMIDSt) will tell us what really happened, and highlight some amazing recent developments in the wondrous world of the financial markets. Peter Waterman will tell about the reactions on the crisis by trade unions and social movements. Peter - formerly director of the ISS in the Hague - is closely connected to the organizing of the World Social Forums. He is also active in the global labour movement. A third guest is the Dutch journalist and sociologist Olav Velthuis, who recently published the book 'Op Naar de Volgende Crisis'. In the book he shows very little confidence in the ability of the present rulers to solve the causes of the crisis. He also points at the ideological and cultural aspects of this crisis.

Crea ( http://www.crea.uva.nl/) Turfdraagsterpad nr. 17 , at Oude Mannenhuispoort in the centre of Amsterdam. It starts at 20:00, admission free for students and staff of UvA, 5 euro others.
