Movie night on the Abahlali
movement
Abahlali is the largest shack dweller’s organization in South Africa. It campaigns to stop evictions and to improve the living conditions of poor people. Aiming at democratizing society from below, the movement refuses party politics and boycotts elections. We will show a series of short documentaries on Abahlali movement, including “A place in the city”, “Dear Mandela” and “From Shack to the Constitutional Court” on new and old apartheid in South-Africa.

BUURTCENTRUM ‘t Blijvertje is gevestigd in een gekraakte etage. Huurders, krakers, tijdelijke huurders en antikrakers hebben de verwaarloosde etage opgeknapt om een ruimte te creëren voor initiatieven uit de buurt en de stad.
Woningcorporatie Ymere wil het woningblok waarin ‘t Blijvertje is gevestigd slopen en goedkope sociale huurwoningen vervangen door dure marktwoningen De bewoners verzetten zich daartegen. Vandaar de naam van het buurtcentrum.
