Info evening at Nijmegen, Utrecht & Amsterdam

How is the situation at this moment in Oaxaca? What is APPO doing? And how
is that related to the present political context of Mexico? How does the
Mexican government react to the activities of the social movements in the
country?

The two faces of Mexico

Social movements under pressure

In the summer of 2006 Oaxaca, Mexico, was the scene of a big revolt in
which indigenous, farmers, teachers, students, activists and unions united
in APPO (Asamblea Popular de los Pueblos de Oaxaca, the People Assembly of
the Tribes of Oaxaca). In the crusade against corruption, poverty and
inequality hundreds of thousands of people for months occupied the streets
of Oaxaca in order to emphasize their demands.

Now, three years later we draw up the balance sheet of the results of this
crusade.

How is the situation at this moment in Oaxaca? What is APPO doing? And how
is that related to the present political context of Mexico? How does the
Mexican government react to the activities of the social movements in the
country?

With:

Marjolein van de Water (XminY Solidarity Fund and Noticias), introduction.
Ruben Valencia Nuņez, co-founder of APPO. Active at Vocal, Casota and
Unitierra (alternative university). What is happening in Oaxaca and where
stands APPO now?
Christiaan Verweij (Grassroots Projects), presentation of a Mexico
activist who travelled the past year on his bike through Mexico.
Pictures of the situation in Oaxaca.

Hoe verhoudt
