Aanstaande vrijdag vind er in het kader van het proces van Ahmed Issa een discussie avond met lezingen plaats over de relatie tussen migratie en kunst.

Naar aanleiding daarvan en het proces van Ahmed Issa organiseren studenten van de Amstedamse Hogeschool voor Kunsten (AHK) in samenwerking met M2M en Allincluded aanstaande vrijdag een discussie-avond rond het thema migratie en cultuur. Wij nodigen hiervoor verschillende kunstenaars uit die rond het thema migratie werken. Het idee is dat iedere kunstenaar iets over zijn werk verteld met daarna een discussie over de rol van kunst in het aan de kaak stellen van de migratie problematiek en de rol van de overheid daarin.
Hieronder vindt u een korte inleidende tekst over de strekking van de avond.

De politiek heeft terecht ingezien dat de kunst- en cultuursector bij uitstek geschikt is om culturele diversiteit te bevorderen. Recentelijk probeert de politiek de maatschappelijke rol die kunst en kunstenaars kunnen vervullen dan ook actief te faciliteren en te stimuleren. Via een 'nieuw cultureel burgerschap' poogt zij het belang van cultuur voor de samenleving te onderstrepen. Het streven is dat iedereen de mogelijkheid krijgt om actief en passief deel te nemen aan cultuur.
Vervang het woord 'iedereen' door 'alle Nederlanders' en dit streven krijgt in het licht van een repressief migratiebeleid een ander karakter. Het toont een politiek die onder het mom van sociale cohesie streeft naar integratie en assimilatie van buitenstaanders in het kader van een nationalistische monocultuur.
In hoeverre moeten burgers zich conformeren aan culturele verwachtingspatronen? In welke mate wordt afwijkend gedrag op prijs gesteld? Met hoeveel valse trots gunnen we onszelf intolerantie jegens vreemden?
Een avond waarin wordt gereflecteerd op de problematiek rond migratie en cultuur in Nederland.

Due to this and the process of Ahmed Issa students from the AHK organise together with M2M and Allincluded coming friday a discussion evening around the theme of migration and culture. For this we invite different artists who use the theme of migration in their work. The idea is to have each artist tell something about their work and after that have a small discussion on the role of art in addressing the migration issues.
Below you'll find a short introductory text on the scope of the evening.

The politicians have rightly recognized that the art- and cultural sector are ideally suited to promote the cultural diversity. Recently the government has tried to actively stimulate and facilitate the role that artists can play on a social-cultural level. Through a 'new cultural citizenship' it tries to stress the importance of culture within the society. The aim is that everyone is given the opportunity to actively and passively participate in culture.
Replace 'everyone' with 'all Dutch citizens' and combined with the repressive migration policy this aim shows a darker side. It shows a political tendency that strives under the flag of social cohesion to integrate and assimilate all outsiders to form a nationalistic monoculture.
To which extend should citizens conform to cultural prediction patterns? How much space is there for those who choose a different approach? With how much fake pride do we praise our intolerance against strangers?
An evening in which we will reflect on the problems around migration and culture in the Netherlands.
