This is the press release and an open letter against the World Congress of Families issued by some groups this week.

Open brief aan de media, participerende organisaties
World Congress of Families
Van 10 tot en met 12 augustus wordt in de Rai te Amsterdam de vijfde
internationale bijeenkomst van de World Congress of Families (WCF)
georganiseerd. De WCF is een bekend netwerk van machtige christelijke
groeperingen die bekend staan om hun anti-feministische, homofobe
en transfobe kijk op de wereld en hun houding tegen abortus.
Fundamentalistische groepen die deel uitmaken van dit netwerk zijn
onder andere Human Life International, Family Research Council,
United Families International, Priests for Life, 'Concerned Women
of America' en Americans United for Life. Deze groepen zijn vooral
in Noord-Amerika bekend om hun conservatieve en anti-mensenrechten
georienteerde gedachtegoed.
Een selectie van uitspraken die voortkomen uit deze groeperingen:
'Homosexual behavior/lifestyle is an unhealthy and harmful practice
that leads to injury, disease and early death for its participants'
en 'Research confirms that homosexuals molest children at rates
vastly higher than heterosexuals'.

Hiernaast voeren deze organisaties actief campagne tegen de rechten
van de vrouw door onder meer vrouwen te bedreigen die abortusklinieken
bezoeken en de medewerkers die daar werken.
Tijdens de eerste week van augustus zal er een van de grootste
bijeenkomsten van homoseksuelen ter wereld in Amsterdam plaatsvinden:
de Canal Pride. De stad Amsterdam heeft samen met bedrijven
campagne gevoerd om te laten zien hoe homovriendelijk de stad is,
hoe tolerant zij staat tegenover de seksuele keuzes van mensen en
hoe welkom mensen van verschillende seksuele voorkeuren zijn in
Amsterdam. Het is ironisch dat de week na deze festiviteiten van
tolerantie, als het geld van de Canal Pride binnen is en de tolerantie
verkocht is, de WCF met haar intolerantie als commerciele mogelijkheid
door Amsterdam en haar bedrijven aangegrepen wordt.
Naast de eerder genoemde Amerikaanse organisaties van de WCF participeren
er ook verschillende Nederlandse organisaties in het congres. Dit
zijn Prisma, Woord en Daad, Vereniging Groot Gezin, Netwerk Landelijke
Ouder Organisaties, European Large Families Confederation, en Chris
(De Hoop). Verschillende leden van de SGP en ChristenUnie zullen als
sprekers aanwezig zijn en minister Rouvoet zal het openingswoord voeren.
Wij vragen deze groeperingen om hun positie publiekelijk kenbaar te
maken en of zij inderdaad hun Amerikaanse partner organisaties steunen
in hun homofobe en anti-feministische denkbeelden. Als zij dit in
Nederland niet doen, waarom participeren zij dan in de WCF en nemen
zij geen afstand van deze Amerikaanse organisaties?
Wij geloven in tegenstelling tot de organisatoren van de WCF in de
vrijheid van het individu en de mogelijkheden die een ieder moet
hebben om zich binnen de maatschappij te kunnen ontwikkelen. Wij
spreken ons daarom uit tegen het WCF die openlijke haatcampagnes
organiseert tegen specifieke groepen die de fundamentalistische regels
van het WCF overtreed. We spreken ons ook uit tegen de manier waarop
het WCF mensen mobiliseert om de rechten van individuen onderuit te
halen. Wij vragen iedereen en met nadruk de media om vraagtekens te
plaatsen bij de organisatie van het WCF in Amsterdam. Daarbij vragen
wij de gemeente van Amsterdam en de de RAI of zij de ideeen van dit
congres ondersteunen en expliciet te maken waarom zij dit congres
faciliteren.
Wij zullen in ieder geval een tegengeluid laten horen en roepen
anderen die ook staan voor de vrijheid van de mens met ons mee te doen.

PRESS RELEASE AND OPEN LETTER
AGAINST THE WORLD CONGRESS OF FAMILIES IN AMSTERDAM

The fifth international meeting of the World Congress of Families (WCF) will be held in Amsterdam, at the Rai, from August 10th to 12th 2009. The WCF is a network of powerful christian groups which are well known for their anti-feminist, homophobic, transphobic and anti-abortion views. Some of the notorious groups in the network include Human Life International, Family Research Council, United Families International,
Priests for Life, 'Concerned Women of America', 'REAL Women of Canada', 'Americans United for Life'. These groups are well known in North America for their regressive and anti-rights work.
Some of the statements on the websites of the participating groups include :
"Homosexual behavior/lifestyle is an unhealthy and harmful practice that leads to injury, disease and early death for its participants." and "Research confirms that homosexuals molest children at rates vastly higher than heterosexuals." (Marcia Barlow, United Families International Guide to family issues. Sexual orientation: UFI; 2004).
These groups have actively campaigned against womens rights, including threatening and harassing women who visit or work at abortion clinics.
The first week of August has seen one of the worlds largest assembly of gays and lesbians in Amsterdam: the Canal Pride. Both the City and commercial companies have been campaigning to show how gay friendly, and how tolerant and welcoming of sexual diversity the City of Amsterdam is. It is ironical that one week after Gay Pride, after all the money has been made from gays and lesbians by 'selling tolerance', money will be made again by promoting intolerance at the WCF.
Besides the groups mentioned above, the WCF also has several Dutch organisations. These are Prisma, Woord en Daad, Vereniging Groot Gezin, Netwerk Landelijke OuderOrganisaties, European Large FAmilies Confederation, and Chris (De Hoop). Several members of SGP and CU are also speakers at the congress, and minister Rouvoet will speak at the opening. We ask these groups to state publicly whether they indeed subscribe to the homophobic and anti-women ideas common to all the
groups which are members of the WCF. If they do not subscribe to these views in the context of The Netherlands, then why do they not dissociate themselves from these American groups at the congress ?
In contrast to the organisers of the WCF, we believe in the freedom of the individual and the freedom to choose ones own way of life in society. We therefore speak out against the WCF, which organises campaigns of hatred to curtail the rights of specific groups. We ask everyone, especially the media, to question the presence of the WCF in Amsterdam. We also ask the City of Amsterdam and the Rai whether they support the ideas of the congress and to explain their reason for doing so.
We call for a voice against the congress and ask all others supporting human rights to do so too.
