Squat Elba (Warsaw) facing eviction nnnnnnnnn - 28.04.2009 12:55
Elba is a two houses squat separated by a line. One side consists of a house and a wagenburg [trailer park] and the other side consists of the second house, a concert hall, and a bar. The other side has also a space for numerous workshops, a FOOD NOT BOMB's kitchen, a skate park and a freeshop We are a part of the collective of ELBA squat in Warsaw, Poland. Elba is a two houses squat separated by a line. One side consists of a house and a wagenburg [trailer park] and the other side consists of the second house, a concert hall, and a bar. The other side has also a space for numerous workshops, a FOOD NOT BOMB's kitchen, a skate park and a freeshop. Both sides have different owners so the first house, squatted in 2004, is not in danger now but the second one, as well as the venue, both squatted in 2007, is to be torn down as the price market is favourable for the owner now. The possible eviction would affect 12 people living on this side and a place for some of the D.I.Y/alternative culture activities in Warsaw. Two years ago the owner offered us an every- month renewable contract, which in a way supported the residents of the house and the different activities taking place here. It's been peaceful two-years life here until the owner came back one month ago and informed us about his decision to take back the land and tear down the buildings. We went to the main office of the company owning our ground and after one-hour talk an agreement was made to give us more time, maybe a year or two. Finally one week later, a representative of the company came to our place and said he had been never told about any agreement and informed us that they give us one month to leave our house. Of course, it's been a shock. As the dialogue always has existed between both parts, it's hard to understand that they leave us such short time to move out, not caring if we would find another place to go and to run all the activities. We need help and support, the news has to be spread that another squat in Europe is facing eviction! Yet, for the time being, we want a peaceful dialogue with the owner so please, if you want to set any protest action, contact us for more information!! -ELBA SQUAT- ul. Sun 3 May: Info night on squats in Poland eetcafe starts 7 pm, info/talks: 8pm During tomorrows eetcafe there will be an opportunity to talk about a solidarity rally with Polish squatters that is going to take place in The Hague on next Wednesday, 6 May. Two of the most active Polish squats and social centers are threatened with eviction. One person who lives at the oldest squat in Poland will be present to distribute information on the rally and say more about the squatting movement in Poland. Info on the rally: Rally in defence of two Polish squats facing eviction in Warsaw and Poznan when: 6 of May (Wednesday), 3 p.m. where: The Hague, NL, in front of Polish Embassy (Alexanderstraat 25) Number of autonomous places in Poland declines. Two the most active squats - Rozbrat in Poznan and Elba in Warsaw - are just now threatened with eviction. Both collectives have declared that they are not going to give up without a fight. In Poznan, Warsaw, Lodz and other Polish cities demos are being planned. Solidarity actions will take place in Oslo, Dublin, Berlin, Reykjavik and also in THE HAGUE, where the Polish Embassy is. There is a need for solidarity with Polish squats. There is a need for political pressure in order to defend these places! Come for the rally! Friends of Rozbrat from NL info: haga@rozbrat.org, 0031-06 49980574 www.rozbrat.org/english.htm. www.elba.bzzz.net http://indymedia.nl/nl/2009/04/59086.shtml http://indymedia.nl/nl/2009/04/59021.shtml -- news from Rozbrat: Rozbrat squat is the oldest squat in Poland; this autumn it would celebrate 15th birthday. It is also a living autonomous social centre; with Anarchist Library, Anarchist Federation and anarchosyndicalist trade union meeting point, bike workshop, printing workshop, concert halls, kitchen of Food not Bombs, seat of Anarchist Publishing House and local ABC - and a home for 20 people. Rozbrat is threatened with eviction. To put it short: the biggest plot where Rozbrat sits was a mortgage for a company who took a loan in a bank in the begging of 90s and disappeared. Now the bank wants their debt back so a debt-collector is obliged to sell it. First court sitting already took place. Final one is going to be soon. Rozbrat Collective locally runs "Rozbrat stays!" campaign since months. But - it is important NOW to put a strong political pressure on local government because NOW it is discussing local land development plan; and Rozbrat Collective is fighting to be a part of it. That is why the action might be something more than just a symbolic act of despair. If the local plan is in favour of Rozbrat (not of developers), there will be chances that nobody wants to buy the land and kick the squat out. That is why Rozbrat crew is organizing a big demo in Poznan, Poland on 9th of May and calls for solidarity actions on the 6th of May. To protest against treating any city as a shopping mall, against conforming everything to the big business, against destroying the social bonds and in defence of places such as Rozbrat; where social, cultural and political functions work together. We want to express our solidarity with Rozbrat. We invite everybody to do so in front of Polish Embassy on the 6th of May. Any support is welcome. -- | |
