Solidarity with the Irish Shell to Sea hunger striker
Amsterdam Shell to Sea Solidarity Campaign - 15.09.2008 22:27

Candle light vigil tomorrow, Tuesday 16th September, 8 - 9pm, at Irish Embassy in Den Haag. Shell to Sea requests that a pipe laying ship, the Solitaire, leave Irish territorial waters, so that Maura Harrington , a frail 54 year old teacher and mother can end her 7 day hunger strike.

There has been an urgent appeal from Co Mayo in Ireland for solidarity with a woman on the 7th day of her hunger strike. There will be a candle light vigil to show solidarity with Maura Harrington between 8 - 9pm, tomorrow night, Tuesday 16th September at the Irish Embassy in Den Haag and a letter to be delivered to the Irish Ambassador.

She has taken this courageous stand because Shell has no consent from the people of Erris to lay pipes in Broadhaven Bay. It is very clear to anyone who has visited Erris recently that Shell has never asked and does not have the consent of the local people for this pipeline. Local government planners have also advised against this pipeline going across the bogland and through an area of landslides. They have been over ruled by central government in Dublin. The local campaign against the pipeline wants the gas to be processed at sea.

This ship owned by All Seas, which has a Dutch captain, has been contracted by Shell to lay underwater pipes. The ship's equipment, according to Shell, became damaged in heavy seas and the damage is being assessed while the ship stays in harbour. Maura Harrington is refusing to end her hunger strike while the ship remains in the Irish port of Killybegs in Co Donegal. It is widely believed that the ship will have to return to Rotterdam for repairs and the campaign requests that it immediately does this, as a humanitarian action, and communicates the departure in writing to Maura Harrington so that she can continue to live.

Letter to Solitaire captain
Hamish Arrowsmith - 17.09.2008 09:27

The Solitaire ship, All seas Ltd 15th September 2008

Dear Captain Simon van der Plicht

I appeal to your humanity to please remove your ship, the Solitaire, immediately from Irish territorial waters, so that Maura Harrington, a mother and teacher of 54 years and with frail health, can end her 7 day hunger strike.

People in your home country, the Netherlands, where Shell also has it headquarters, have become increasingly concerned over the last few days about the condition of Maura Harrington. There is no need for your ship to remain in harbour in Killybegs and it should immediately leave and communicate this departure in writing to Maura Harrington so that she can continue to live.

Yours sincerly
Amsterdam Shell to Sea Solidarity Campaign
