Sign petition for Darfur negoiations
Avaaz - 15.09.2007 02:22

For four years, Sudan's military ruler, General Omar Bashir, has organized brutal militias to murder over 200,000 of his own citizens in the region of Darfur, all because a few of them dared to oppose his rule. After a massive global outcry, the killing has decreased and the UN has authorized peacekeepers - but what peace will they have to keep? Our leaders can seize this chance to press for the fair and lasting peace that the people of Darfur want, or they can appease Bashir, seek peace on the cheap, and abandon millions of Sudanese to the whims of a genocidal regime.

Next Friday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will convene the "Darfur Contact Group" of 17 leaders to help set the agenda for Darfur's peace talks. This is our best hope yet for voices to triumph over violence. Sign the petition below, forward it to friends and demand that the Contact Group deploy high-level diplomatic teams to the region to secure a fair and lasting peace for the people of Darfur. The petition will be delivered to UN representatives in New York at a huge rally organized by Avaaz and other Darfur activists:

 http://www.avaaz.org/en/darfur

The mass killing in Darfur is a stain on the conscience of the world. Avaaz is built on the principle that every human life is of equal worth. That principle calls each one of us to act now to stand with the people of Darfur, and demand that our governments help them bring a final end to their long nightmare.

With hope,
Ricken, Ben, Milena, Tom and the rest of the Avaaz Team
