Komende maand organiseren we vanuit het 12 oktober committee verschillende activiteiten om thema's als neo-kolonialisme, verzet en voedselsoevereiniteit in de verf te zetten. Meer informatie over komende activiteiten tijdens deze avond

Waarom 12 Oktober ?
12 Oktober wordt in verschillende landen in Amerika gevierd om de “ontdekking” van de Nieuwe Wereld door Cristoffel Colombus in 1492 te herdenken. Voor inheemse volkeren echter is deze datum een historisch
keerpunt van hun onderdrukking en kolonisatie. 515 jaar na de aanvang van hun kolonisatie, worden inheemse volkeren nog steeds uitgebuit, gediscrimineerd en onderdrukt. Hun mensenrechten worden vaak geschonden door nationale en internationale actoren. Multinationals verdrijven hen van hun grondgebied en plunderen hun natuurlijke hulpbronnen.
We vinden daarom dat het belangrijk is om op 12 oktober extra stil te staan bij ons gedeelde koloniale verleden, maar ook bij de hedendaagse vormen van kolonialisme en imperialisme. We willen solidair zijn met het verzet in Latijns Amerika en manieren definiëren om hun te ondersteunen.

During this month till our grand finale on October 12th the committee 12th of October (in which several activist groups and social organisations are involved) will be organizing several activities relating to the issue of neo-colonialism, resistance and food sovereinity. Why October 12th? **
The 12th of October is celebrated in many countries in the Americas to commemorate the ‘discovery’ of the New World by Christopher Colombus in 1492. However, for indigenous people in this continent this date has
been a historical turning point that marks the beginning of their colonization and suppression. 515 years after the beginning of colonization, indigenous people still have to face exploitation, discrimination and repression. Their human rights are often violated by national and international actors. Transnational corporations expell
them from their territories and exploit their natural resources.
Therefore we think it is important to use the 12th of October to reflect on our common-past of colonialism, but also on present day forms of colonialism and imperialism. We want to show our solidarity with resistance in Latin America. And define ways to support them.
