uranium transport in Rotterdam harbour ! SOFA Muenster - 30.08.2007 12:03
This morning a transport of depleted uranium (DU) from Gronau/Germany arrived in Rotterdam-Waalhaven. Normally uranium from Almelo comes at the same time by lorry, too. In Rotterdam the DU in form of UF6 will be loaded today onto the MV Doggersbank owned by the Wagenborg Shipping Company in Delfzijl. This transport is already the fourth this year and its destination is the former secret nuclear city of Novouralsk near Ekaterinburg. We expect the ship to leave the Waalhaven tomorrow and to arrive in St. Petersburg on 4 September. The ship will also pass Copenhagen/Malmoe (2 September) and Helsinki/Tallinn (4 September). Pictures of the ship and the loading process in Rotterdam taken by Greenpeace in May when the last transport left can be viewed on www.urantransport.de in the news-archives. The depleted uranium is sent to Russia to be stored indefinitely. Thereby the uranium enricher Urenco (owned by the Dutch and British government and the German utilities EON and RWE) saves hundreds of million euros in waste depositing costs - a very attractive business for Urenco and its state/private owners. Over the last 10 years more than 80 000 t of uranium waste were sent to Russia where the population is not even informed about the import of nuclear waste. To stopp all this and to stopp uranium enrichment completely (e.g. there is a very critical military dimension) there will be an International Uranium Conference in Dortmund/Germany on 22 September. The invitation and programme can be viewed on www.urantransport.de in English, too. Several Dutch environmental organizations will take part too plus groups from Russia, Finland, Sweden and France. Everyone is invited to come and to join the fight ! E-Mail: sofa-ms@web.de Website: http://www.sofa-ms.de |
