Broeinest maandag 28 mei Film 'Reclaim Power: activists against climate change - a new social movement?' ------------------------- This film by the German video group Cinerebelde is a documentary report on the Camp for Climate Action that was set up in the summer of 2006 and saw 600 people convinced that there is no time to waste, trying to shut down one of the biggest C02 emitters in Europe: Drax coal-fired power station in Yorkshire / UK. With over one hundred workshops on a wide range of topics, the 10 day camp was a space of collective learning, sustainable living and taking direct action on the root causes of climate change. 'Reclaim Power' lets scientists speak about what climate change is, what we can expect to happen the next few years and what kind of radical changes are needed to turn the tables. It highlights how the camp showed practical low energy solutions in action as well as its focus on mass direct action, culminating in a day of protest in an attempt to shut down Drax. Of interest here are the strategies that climate activists in the UK have developed these past years, from communication guerrilla and critical art to mass direct action and occupations. There is a dominant message repeated throughout the film: that governments and corporations are not going to change the world so that there is only one alternative: we have to. How we should go about doing it and if climate activists will form an 'exciting new social movement' in the next five to ten years, the time we have to ‘get our act together before it’s too late’, will be points of discussion this evening at the Broeinest. Language: English with English subtitles. Plantage Doklaan 10-12, Amsterdam, 20.00 - 24.00 www.broeinest.info http://www.cinerebelde.org/site.php3?id_rubrique=166 |
