Nederlands - Filippijnse Solidaiteitbeweging (NFS) BACKGROUND 8,000 residents of Rapu-rapu Island (Philippines) are affected by the Australian mining firm Lafayette. The mining company aims to extract 10,000 tons of copper, 14,000 tons of zinc, 50,000 ounces of gold and 600,000 ounces of silver from the island. It has triggered mud flows, flash floods, fish kills and toxic mine waste spills causing great damage to the people’s health, livelihood and the island’s delicate ecosystem. It is a pet project of President Gloria M. Arroyo, whose regime has been found responsible for brutal human rights violations. Lawyer Gil Gojol, who was representing the island’s residents in a class action suit against Lafayette, was murdered last December 12, 2006 by assassins linked to government troopers. ABN AMRO is part of the bank syndicate funding the project. The project does not meet the bank’s sustainable development policy. The Nederlands - Filippijnse Solidaiteitbeweging (NFS) is urging ABN AMRO to withdraw its funding from the project. E-Mail: nfs@enefes.demon.nl Website: http://homepage.mac.com/mkardol/nfs/ |
