Op zondagmiddag 18 maart is er een symposium in Crea, Amsterdam waarin de balans wordt opgemaakt van '10 jaar globaliseringsbeweging'. Dit in de aanloop naar de G8-top in Duitsland.

Mondiaal verzet en top-protesten: Kritische terugblik en toekomstvisies
Seattle 1999, Washington en Praag 2000, Gothenburg en Genua 2001, Quito 2002, Thessaloniki, Evian en Cancún 2003, Gleneagles, Mar del Plata en Hong Kong 2005; dat zijn maar een paar plekken van massaprotest tegen mondiale topconferenties in recente jaren. De volgende halte wordt de G8-top in Heiligendamm, Duitsland in juni 2007. Gaat deze niet te onderdrukken beweging ze deze keer 'dichtgooien'?
Op zondag 18 maart organiseren het Trans National Institute, XminY Solidariteitsfonds en Dissent-nl een activistisch symposium om stil te staan bij 10 jaar van top-protesten en de dynamiek van de internationale bewegingen. Welk effect hebben deze top-protesten gehad op de internationale instellingen en hun beleid, en op de mondiale bewegingen? Hoe verhouden de mondiale protestevenementen in het Noorden zich tot de dagelijkse strijd in het mondiale Zuiden? Wat voor lessen kunnen er geleerd worden voor de toekomst. Zijn er mogelijkheden voor nieuwe manieren van interveniëren in de mondiale machtsverhoudingen en voor nieuwe manieren om solidariteit te praktiseren? Twee aan elkaar verbonden panels van 'activistische onderzoekers' zullen de voorzet geven voor analyse en reflectie over deze thema's.

13.00-14.30: eerste panel: Historische ontwikkelingen van mondiaal verzet.

Peter Waterman, auteur van "Globalisation, social movements and the new internationalisms"
Dit panel zal enkele belangrijke historische ontwikkelingen belichten en het traject van het verzet tegen neoliberale globalisering van de afgelopen tien jaar. Hoe heeft het mondiale Zuiden de inspiratie geboden voor nieuwe praktijken van verzet in Noordelijke landen? Wat was het belang van gebeurtenissen als Seattle vergeleken met de eerdere situatie van thematische campagnes? Waarom werden die internationale toppen eigenlijk het middelpunt van protest en verzet? Hoe ontstonden er nieuwe verbonden tussen verschillende actoren zoals NGO's, vakbonden, socialistische groepen en basisbewegingen?

15.00-16.30: Tweede panel: visies op strategieen voor mondiale strijd en netwerken

Het tweede panel richt zich op gedachtes over de huidige en toekomstige mogelijkheden en richtingen van mondiale bewegingen. Gezien de uitdagingen die in het eerste panel naar voren gebracht werden, willen we de volgende vragen beantwoorden: Hoe wordt voorkomen dat weer teruggaan naar het oude beleid van 'single issues', zowel praktisch als ideologisch? Welke praktijk en methode van interventie levert concrete resultaten op? Op welke basis moet het bouwwerk van schuivende allianties gebaseerd worden? Hebben we een alternatief nodig voor de praktijk van het netwerk? Welk verband bestaat er tussen het verzet tegen neoliberaal beleid en het creëren van alternatieven?
Na afloop zal er gelegenheid zijn voor drankjes, hapjes en media movie theatre. De plek daarvoor wordt nog aangekondigd

Global resistance and summit protest: critical reflections and future visions
An activist symposium organised by Transnational Institute, XminY, and Dissent-NL)
Seattle 1999, Washington and Prague 2000, Gothenburg and Genoa 2001, Quito 2002, Thessaloniki, Evian and Cancún 2003, Gleneagles, Mar del Plata and Hong Kong 2005 - these are just some of the sites of mass protest against global summits in recent years. The next stop is the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, in June 2007. Is this irrepressible movement going to 'shut them down'?
On Sunday 18 March, the Transnational Institute, XminY, and Dissent-NL will organise an activist symposium to reflect on 10 years of summit protest and evaluate the broader dynamics of the transnational movements that have unfolded beyond these global days of action. What effects have these summit protests had on the international institutions and their policies, and on the dynamic of global movements? How do global protest events in the North relate to the daily struggles in the GlobalSouth? What are the lessons for the future? And what are the possibilities for new types of intervention in global power relations and for new way of practising solidarity? Two interconnected panels of activist researchers will open a space for analysis and reflection on these broader questions.

This panel will highlight some important historical developments and trajectories of the resistance against neoliberal globalisation during the last 10 years. How has the global South inspired new practices of resistance in Northern countries? What was the meaning of events like Seattle compared to a prior context of single-issue campaigning? Why did summits of international institutions become a focus of protest and resistance? How did the new alliances form between various actors, such as NGOs, trade unions, socialist groups and grassroots networks? What are the successes and failures of the 'politics of networking'?

15.00-16.30 2nd Panel: Envisioning strategies for global struggles and networking

The second panel provides a space for thinking about present and future possibilities and directions of global movements. Facing the challenges that have been highlighted in the first panel, we would like to touch upon the following questions: How do we avoid ending up with the old problem of single-issue politics, both ideologically and practically? What practices and types of intervention could produce concrete results? On what ground should we base the construction of shifting alliances? Do we need an alternative to the practice of networking? And what is the relationship between resisting neoliberal policies and creating alternative worlds?
