Hollywood doet Seattle

Ruim zeven jaar na dato heeft Hollywood de globaliseringsbeweging ontdekt. Er is een film vol sterren in de maak over de befaamde 'millenniumslag om de WTO' in Seattle in 1999.

Naar verluidt zijn de opnames voor 'Battle in Seattle' (

http://imdb.com/title/tt0850253/) allemaal inmiddels gemaakt en ligt de boel in de montageruimte. De film zou nog dit jaar uitkomen.

Als plot wordt het volgende vrijgegeven: "Activists arrive in Seattle, Washington en masse to protest a meeting of the World Trade Organization. Riots and chaos ensue when large crowds become hostile and police are outnumbered." (Actievoerders stromen massaal Seattle, Washington, binnen om te protesteren tegen de WTO. Rellen en chaos zijn het gevolg als de meute vijandig begint te worden en de politie in de minderheid geraakt.) Al in de tweede zin een fikse leugen dus (als er iemand gewelddadig was in Seattle, dan die politiemacht).

De regisseur van de film is de Ier Steward Townsend, die tot nu toe vooral bekend is als acteur in tv-series en b-films. Ook de rest van de cast belooft niet al te veel goeds: de hoofdrol is voor Charlize Theron en daarnaast figureren nog allerlei andere Beverly Hills-bewoners die nog nooit op een politieke mening betrapt zijn (met uizondering misschien van Woody Harelson, die wel eens een brug heeft bezet samen met Earth First! en Susan Sarandon die ook graag demonstreert.) Linkse filmverteraan Haskell Wexler speelt in de film zichzelf (Wexler werd oa. beroemd met de film Medium Cool, gemaakt tijdens de rellen bij de Democratische Conventie in Chicago. Daarna maakte hij meerdere films over de anti-oorlogsbeweging, tijdens Seattle maakte hij een soort remake van Medium Cool).

De werkelijke demonstranten van toen vragen zich ondertussen af wie hun rol zal spelen. Op indymedia Portland
