“No uranium flight from Dresden to Russia!”
German anti-nuclear groups - 18.12.2006 04:59

Bonn, Lüchow, Ahaus, 17 December 06 – German anti-nuclear groups have called on Chancellor Angela Merkel to stop an apparently imminent uranium freight flight from Rossendorf near Dresden to Russia.
A Dresden action alliance "Kein Uran nach Russland" (no uranium to Russia) has information on actions at the location. Reachable at phone #49 0162-2683438.
A open letter to the chancellor quotes the Internet newspaper "ngo-online" (13.12.2006) in turn quoting the news agency ddp, that the flight is to run on 18 December, i.e. today.

The federation of environment advocacy groups BBU, the “No nuclear waste in Ahaus” and the “Lüchow-Dannenberg Citizens’ Environment Protection Initiative” jointly oppose the transportation of this radioactive cargo to Russia, regardless of the mode used, says the letter.
“The risks during such a transport are incalculable and the stay of the radiaoactive material in Russia would not be controllable by the public.
“The Security Council of the federal government rated the transports of highly enriched weapons-grade uranium as follows:
. Possible within Europe!
. Not possible outside Europe because there is such demand for highly-enriched uranium that it has to be assumed that the material will not reach its determined destination!!!

”It is again becoming clear that there is no safe solution for keeping radioactive materials. Only the immediate closure of atomic installations can contribute to the atomic waste mountain no longer growing.

“And in the search for a final repository the safety of the population must have absoluteb priority.

“The Bundesverband Bürgerinitiativen Umweltschutz (BBU), the civic action group "Kein Atommüll in Ahaus" and the Bürgerinitiative Umweltschutz Lüchow-Dannenberg call on you to prevent the planned transportation of the uranium from Dresden-Rossendorf.

“We call on you further to answer the following questions:

1. What radioactive materials are still in Dresden-Rossendorf, in what quantities and in what combinations?
2. What substances and amounts are involved in the disputed transport from Dresden-Rossendorf to Russia?
3. What plans does the federal government have for the radioactive inventory still in Dresden-
Rossendorf?
4. What approval procedures are planned for this currently and for the future?
5. What other approval procedures are planned or pending in connection with the atomic site Dresden-Rossendorf?
6. When, how often and in what quantities/compositions was radioactive material moved from Germany to Russia from 1.1.2000 to 15.12.2006, and what routes and modes of transport were used?
7. Is the government informed by other states if transit flights with radioactive material are to cross Germany (without landing)?
8. Who is responsible for disaster protection during such flights across Germany?
9. Up to 15.12.2006 has the federal government ever protested to other governments about flights across the federal territory by planes carrying radioactive material?
10. If not, why not?

”Dear chancellor,
we’re not concerned if it takes more than a day to answer the questions.
All the same, we do believe that your response can’t wait long. After all, rapid reaction is required in case of a disaster – and that fast action requires the information we’re requesting.
Most urgent right now is that you immediately stop the imminent uranium flight.”
The letter is signed by Udo Buchholz for the BBU, Francis Althoff
for the Bürgerinitiative Umweltschutz Lüchow Dannenberg and Felix Ruwe for "Kein Atommüll in Ahaus".
