Cuba Slams US Bankrolled Subversion
Rodrigo Rojas - 15.12.2006 09:23

Havana, Dec 14 ( http://www.prensa-latina.cu) Cuba denounced on Thursday the US government´s provocative and unacceptable nature toward Cuban counterrevolutionaries, while at the same time it worsens the strict economic blockade on the island.

A Granma newspaper editorial today stated how on November 15, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) published an extensive report entitled: "Assistance to democracy in Cuba needs better administration and supervision."

The GAO is a US Congress entity dedicated to investigating how the federal government and its agencies administrate the budget, states the daily.

After reviewing millions destined by the US government to foster subversion and mercenary groups to discredit Cuba, the mentioned document concluded that those funds have been squandered.

Important US mass media, Granma adds, echoed that US taxpayers´ pockets have been drained to finance counter-revolutionary groups in Cuba. According to the US media, over half the funds never even reached Cuba, but are stuck in Miami.

Part of that money was used to purchase articles like video-games, bicycles, coats, chocolates and DVD readers, recalled the publication. The report reveals that, from the total of squandered funds, a part was destined for the US Interest Office in Havana to distribute in Cuba.

That Office would have delivered, between 1996 and 2006, about 385,000 lbs of medicines, food and clothes, 23,000 short-wave radios, as well as millions of books, news bulletins and other "information" materials, according to data published in the GAO document.

This confirms the reiterated Cuban accusation that the so-called US diplomacy in Cuba acts as a counterrevolutionary barracks and violates the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

That office introduces in Cuba, abusing of its diplomatic privileges, articles and materials that are not for that Mission´s official use, but to supply mercenaries that work for the US government, Granma stated.

The GAO report proves that such dissidence is no more than a group financed and led by Washington, reiterates Granma.

Cuba will adopt the necessary measures to face these aggressions with dignity, serenity and courage, the editorial pointed out.
