Calderon meets with military high commands. i - 04.12.2006 03:30
Calderon has breakfast with the military. The Andere Campagne's journey comes to an end . Two pieces of news: 1. As of this Friday, Mexico has a new right-wing president, namely Felipe Calderon. On Saturday morning, he met with the high commands of the armed forces. There, among other things he announced that the Army and Navy won't be included in his so-called austerity decree (a plan to cut down on official spending). On the contrary, in the Proyecto de Presupuesto de Egresos (in short: next year's Budget), the troop's and the navy's salaries will rise 'substantially'. With precedents like Atenco and Oaxaca, it's not hard to imagine Calderon wanting a stronger military/police: [...] today, democracy exists both because of the Army’s loyalty, as well as its institutional life. Translated details for this will probably be all over soon, in the meantime here's a small fragment: To say Oaxaca from below is to say compa~nero and compa~nera; to give shelter to her\him who's being persecuted; to move our own forces for the presentation of the disappeared, and for the liberation of the detained; to inform; to call for international solidarity and support; to not keep quiet; to articulate this Southern pain and to indicate that it extends throughout this country and beyond its borders, as if it was from below that pains are named, spoken, heard, and walked.
