vanavond filmavond overtoom: Indian Activism
VMC - 07.11.2006 17:56

De films;

BULLSHIT
73 min.
Directors: PeÅ Holmquist and Suzanne Khardalian
2005

The film is about Vandana Shiva, Indian environmental activist and nuclear physicist, who was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1993. It?s a film on globalisation and patenting, on genetic engineering, bio-piracy, indigenous knowledge.

In this documentary, filmmakers follow Vandana Shiva, an Indian environmentalist and nuclear physicist, over a two-year period, from her organic farm at the foot of the Himalayas to institutions of power all over the world. Vandana Shiva does battle with Monsanto, a huge American biotech company, when they try to patent an ancient Indian strain of wheat and together with Dalits she tries to close down a Coca-Cola plant in Kerala, in a conflict involving groundwater pollution.

The filmmakers describe Monsanto from the inside and arrange what proves a shaking meeting between Vandana Shiva and Barun Mitra, liberal think-tank, lobbyist and fierce critic of Vandana Shiva and the man who gave her the Bullshit Prize.

What a woman, what strength, what optimism...! It's so exhilarating to see this film.

Drowned Out - We Can't Wish Them Away
75 minutes
Director: Franny Armstrong
2004

Three choices. Move to the slums in the city, accept a place at a resettlement site or stay at home and drown. The people of Jalsindhi in central India must make a decision fast. In the next few weeks, their village will disappear underwater as the giant Narmada Dam fills.
Bestselling author Arundhati Roy joins the fight against the dam and asks the difficult questions. Will the water go to poor farmers or to rich industrialists? What happened to the 16 million people displaced by fifty years of dam building? Why should I care?
DROWNED OUT follows the Jalsindhi villagers through hunger strikes, rallies, police brutality and a six-year Supreme Court case. It stays with them as the dam fills and the river starts to rise...

"An inspiring record of a quite extraordinary campaign of mass resistance, at once angry, compassionate, disturbing and yet empowering, it makes for urgent and necessary viewing...Critics Choice" Time Out (London)
