Oaxaca in maximum alert again; end of talks AaM - 19.10.2006 04:35
The Senate failed to take a decision on Oaxaca. That seemed to be the only option to prevent an intervention in Oaxaca city *and* state. 20.000 militaries, federal police, city and local police, PRI gangs, and the paramilitary Los Zeta's (SOA; School of 'Assasins'/America) are ready for it. Received from Nancy Davies (one of the NarcoNews writers): Hang by your thumbs: Oaxaca in maximum alert again The three national senators cannot agree,of course, on declaring a disappearance of powers. The PRI says no, the PRD says yes, and the swing vote is the PAN guy who's consulting. No surprise there. Meanwhile, the APPO has declared a maximum alert again, and what I find very meaningful in this is that they are calling on every asamblea in the state, in colonias, in pueblos, in every organizeable group, to be ready to defend themselves. The fact that these goups are referred to as asambleas means they are democratic participative local face-to-face organizations, and in numbers which appear significant. The certainly appears to be a statewide blanket of asambleas, with outbeaks of violence in various areas: in t he city of course, and in the sierra norte, Pinotepa Nacional, and the Istmo. The asambleas stand ready to assume a role in the fate of Oaxaca, and meanwhile 11 other states are following Oaxaca's lead, which is why the PAN has a big decision --they are facing a national movement, which I beleive is largely an economic protest, within the context of national repression against those who try to defend their economic/cultural positions. In the bigger context, this is what is going on in Latin America. Website: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oaxacastudyactiongroup/ |
