Awesome squat action Rotterdam (EN) fam. kraken - 22.07.2006 22:01
16 individual houses (ie 16 front doors, not all next to each other but all in one street) were squatted on Snellinckstraat Rotterdam, near Nieuwe Binnenweg yesterday. one two three four Yesterday, 16 (yes sixteen) houses were squatted in central Rotterdam, in one concerted action. A loose group of artists, students and activists combined forces to reclaim beautiful empty buildings which will now be used for living space and ateliers. The owner, Woning Bedrif Rotterdam (a housing corporation) had left the buildings to rot, having booted out the original tenants mroe than a year ago. Sinks were smashed and electricty meters were removed to prevent squatters, but unfortunately these devious tactics simply did not work. These glorious 3 storey buildings which date from the 1890s and have many nice features, such as balconies on two floors (see foto), were planned first to be completely demolished, then suggested to be renovated ie completely gutted with just the front edifice remaining. Hopefully now the stay of execution can be extended into an agreement which will provide young Rotterdammers with what they desperately need: cheap affordable housing and workshop space. The local action group representing the remaining renters is said to be sympathetic to the new initiative. As featured in today's Algemeen Dagblad (Rotterdam)! Fotos follow... |
