court case Leids Bezet this thursday LeidsBezet - 05.06.2006 18:48
Thursday the 8th of june at 13:30 at the Parnassusweg, there will be a court case of the Bulgarian state against our house. Since October last year, in one of the most expensive commercial streets in the city center of Amsterdam, the former Bulgarian travel agency, owned by the Bulgarian state, has been squatted. We have not only lived there, but have also housed several public and political activities, including a give-away store, food cooperation and weekly free movies and food. The Bulgarian embassy in the Netherlands is supposed to take care of the building, and has done so by leaving it virtually empty for almost six years. Now, after we took the right to use it in a meaningful manner, they allegedly want to rent it out to the Nederlandse Beleggingsmaatschappij (Dutch Investment Trust). They will either leave it empty again or make nice money there. This in itself is already a shame of course, but more problematic is that we might be forced to look for a new house. For now, we will have to see if the justice system will let money and ownership prevail over living and the public space we have. If things turn out for the worst, we hope to have made enough of the squat as long as it lasted, and look forward to your presence here at Leids Bezet, for your pleasure and also for solidarity with the house.
