Reactie uit Mumbai
Anay - 20.04.2006 11:08

I told my friend in Mumbai about the sit-in in The Hague.

He sent me the following reply (just for your information!):

I would like to resent with you respectfully. There is no doubt that people who lost the land should be properly rehabiliated but the fact remains that India where 2 % land and 20 % of population is situated, finding alternative land (fertile) seems impossible for me.
Accepting that idea of large dams is unviable, I think now the gears cant be reversed. Billions of $ are invested in the project and we are paying its interest. Similarly my state is having 4000 MW shortage of electricity which is almost 40 % of state demand. I face powercut for 2.5 hours a day but at interior parts its 12 hrs power cut at 45 degrees tempreture in summer

Its been said that Narmada Project will create 1100 MW power generation at least cost and pollution. We still cant afford energy produced out of Natural Gas. And everything is ready and unless height is increased power generation wont start.

There is no doubt about concerns of NBA about poor farmers and Adivasis who cant do anything else for survival and are voiceless, I think now its too late to reverse the gears.

So I believe instead of settlement of land with land, some ways can be found out. I believe even if these 34000 families are given pension for few years and if they are accommodated in public works department it can resolve issue to certain extent.

In this case total justice looks impossible so they should bargain for maxium extent of justice. There is no doubt about sincerity of Medha Patkar and affected farmers.

But her so called supporters from all over world should re think about their heavy consumption of natural resources, which is root cause of all these things.

Would like to discuss these things.
