Agnes van Ardenne - Op welke planeet leeft u?
rw - 26.07.2005 11:47

Speaking after August 2004's Gatumba massacre in Burundi by Agathon Rwasa's FNL, Development Minister Agnes van Ardenne said that this was the first time this group had killed civilians. What planet is she on?

Speaking after August 2004's Gatumba massacre in Burundi by Agathon Rwasa's FNL, Agnes van Ardenne said:

"What they did now is totally different from all the attacks in the past. In Gatumba women, children, babies were murdered in a most cruel way, with machetes, guns, and some were burnt alive. They didn't do that before. They attacked the Burundian armed forces until now, and are still doing, but they don't attack vulnerable people - women, children etc., so it's totally new."

Has the talented Mrs Ardenne never read any of the reports produced by Human Rights Watch ( http://www.hrw.org/reports/2000/burundi/Burn004-02.htm#P53_4063) and Amnesty International ( http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/ENGAFR160092003) over the last decade? Did she think that the 21 civilian victims of the December 2000 "Titanic Express" massacre ( http://agathonrwasa.blogspot.com/2005/06/amnesty-international-and.html), (and the countless others murdered by the FNL on the roads around Bujumbura) ambushed, robbed, and brutally murdered themselves?

Prior to the Gatumba massacre, Agnes Van Ardenne's government had been the Hutu extremist's best friend in Europe, inviting Agathon Rwasa to the Netherlands and feting him as a stateman. Now that the world has forgotten about Gatumba, and despite Mrs Ardenne's forthright condemnation of the attack, they are again. Are these people really fit to decide the direction of European Union policy in Centre Africa?

Waar/wat is Gatumba?
Bigi Bakra - 26.07.2005 12:37

rw - 26.07.2005 16:28

 http://www.congoned.dds.nl/gatumba.html

"Even after it became increasingly clear that accepting responsibility for the attack might be seriously damaging to his group, Habimana as well as the national secretariat made no retraction. They did elaborate on several reasons why the FNL had made the attack. They referred to the many killings of civilians that had gone unpunished in the years of conflict in Burundi, seeming to suggest that attacking the Banyamulenge was a justifiable response to these previous killings. Habimana also claimed that the FNL force had attacked the military and police camps and had pursued soldiers and police who fled from their camps to the refugee camp. There, said Habimana, Banyamulenge had brought out arms that had been hidden and fired on the FNL. As the days passed, he elaborated this explanation to the point of calling the refugee camp the Banyamulenge general staff headquarters. No evidence supports these claims."
