EVICTION THREAT for African Foundation Lampfa Galerie Lampfall - 15.10.2004 19:46
EVICTION THREAT for African Foundation Lampfall (www.lampfallfoundation.com), on monday 18th of october 2004. SOLIDARITY NEEDED, aka many people to come and be there to prevent an eviction. Please come and spend the night on sunday the 17th so that they can’t just evict this space.) The space is a unique social centre for many african/dutch people of different social backgrounds. It has been here for 10 years and is represented by an international artist community.( www.lampfallfoundation.com) Here they can meet, eat, play music, give lectures, help each other, exchange information. They give workshops on topics like sufism, baye-fall movement, djembe, drumming etc. African culture, art and tradition are being promoted and preserved at this space. The Woningbouwvereniging (building corp.) AWV is trying to restore the shops in this street, so they can sell them back for a higher price. Many shopkeepers are united in a stichting (foundation) to prevent this. Legally, because of failure to pay rent on time in the past, they can evict them. The rent however has been paid up until the end of october, although a bit later than supposed to. The person representing the Lampfall foundation has been made to believe that things were to work out allright. After being tossed around by the woningbouwvereniging, waiting for a final answer, one that was promised, but never came, finally the answer was that they are going to be evicted on monday morning. Technically, they might be right to evict. From a human perspective however, this is not acceptable. They could legally murder a space that is very important for some people, and there is not another space like this. Morally it is wrong, because they kick out a renter so they can make more money in the long run from another renter. (gentrification-a-go-go) SO PLEASE COME, bring a sleeping bag, barricading tools and some good spirit.(please bring materials) If we can form a human shield around this place they will not pass and we have more time to find a solution. 06 1837 3674 (Lamp) or 06 1051 0174 ( Hawa) adress: Nieuwe Hoogstraat 5, Galerie Lampfall.
