Resist the 2005 G8 Summit – ESF Meetings In 2005 the G8 (a Group of Eight of the worlds largest economies and most powerful nation-states) returns to Europe. As in recent years, resistance is being organised. The Dissent! Network was set up in the autumn of 2003 to begin co-ordinating radical resistance to the Summit and to build a lasting anti-capitalist movement in the UK. The Network consists of a number of autonomous local and working groups, all of which work within the hallmarks of Peoples’ Global Action (PGA): http://www.nadir.org/nadir/initiativ/agp/free/pga/hallm.htm When the G8 meet at Gleneagles hotel in Perthshire, Scotland (around 60km north of Edinburgh), the Dissent! Network are calling for people to join the convergences in Scotland and to disrupt the Summit. The Peoples’ Global Action European Conference, which took place in Belgrade in July 2004, has supported this call and is also calling for simultaneous actions in villages, towns and cities worldwide on the opening day of the Conference: Wednesday 6th July 2005. To view the PGA Call, go to: http://www.dissent.org.uk/content/view/60/ The mobilisation to Scotland next year, and the Global Day of Action, is beginning to be networked and co-ordinated internationally. During the European Social Forum (ESF), taking place in London from October 13th-17th 2004, the Dissent! Network are hosting a ‘Day of Dissent Against the G8’. The event will take place at the Beyond ESF event, autonomous from the ‘official’ Social Forum. The event will take place at Middlesex University, White Hart Lane Campus, London, N17 8HR (opposite White Hart Lane train station) from 11am on Friday 15th October 2004. The day will include educational workshops, skill sharing, training, discussions, debates, opportunities to become involved with working groups, and time to meet with groups involved in the mobilisation. It will be a chance to discuss and plan actions, and share and compare our experiences of past mobilisations. The Day of Dissent! will be followed by a benefit party from 9pm. For more information about the event, including a full program, check out www.dissent.org.uk or www.wombles.org.uk or go to: London Action Resource Centre (Larc) (62 Fieldgate Street, Whitechapel, London, E1 1ES) or the Dissent! stall inside the ‘official’ ESF at Alexandra Palace when you arrive in London. There is also an email list for internationally co-ordinating the mobilisation and the Global Day of Action.
