Almelo, 24 april 2004 � Ruim 50 mensen demonstreerden vanmiddag tegen de uitbrei-ding van activiteiten van Urenco. Dit ter gelegenheid van de 18de herdenkingsdag van de kernramp bij Tsjernobyl op 26 april 1986.

SP Tweede Kamerlid Krista van Velzen bepleitte als eerste spreekster de sluiting van Urenco. Spreker William van den Heuvel schetste de gang rond de bezwaarprocedure tegen de uitbreidingsplannen van Urenco waar hij vanuit het Nederlands Euregionaal Nucleair Overleg (NENO) bij betrokken is.

Na de smakelijke bijdrage van de actiegroep UAANEE die al jaren tegen de Urenco-vestiging in Gronau protesteert, zette de demonstratieve optocht zich in beweging en trok vanuit de Almelose binnenstad naar de Urencovestiging aan de stadsrand.

Daar legde Jan Schaake van het landelijk Platform tegen de �Nieuwe Oorlog� het verband tussen Urenco Almelo, de verdere verspreiding van kernwapens en de Joint Strike Fighter. De demonstratie kreeg een internationaal tintje door de bloemen die Joop Zwart neerlegde voor de slachtoffers van de ramp bij Tsjernobyl en door de vertegenwoordiger van de Japanse vredesbeweging die aandacht vroeg voor de slachtoffers van Hirosjima en Nagasaki.

De Tsjernobyl-herdenking in Almelo was voor de vijfde maal georganiseerd door het Nederlands Euregionaal Nucleair Overleg, een samenwerkingsverband van milieu- en vredesgroepen en afdelingen van politieke partijen in Twente, Zuid Oost Drenthe en de Achterhoek.
