Vanunu's vrijlating uitgesteld

Aangezien hij weigerde te vertellen waar hij na zijn vrijlating zou gaan wonen, is de vrijlatin g van Vanunu uitgesteld.
Het adres waar Vanunu oorspronkelijk zou gaan verblijven, was al uitgelekt, wat feitelijk voor hem een levensbedreigende situatie zou betekenen: Enerzijds mag hij Israel niet uit, anderzijds is hij stelselmatig in de Israelische pers afgeschilderd als een landverrader, ondermeer met behulp van geluidsopnames van ondervragingen door de geheime dienst.

"Meir Vanunu said Tuesday night he is concerned about his brother's safety, in view of what he terms "the incitement conducted against him" by members of Israel's security establishment. Among other things, Meir Vanunu noted that several Internet sites carry messages hinting that Mordechai Vanunu ought to be killed."

Volgens een persbericht van Reuters zou Vanunu dan toch zijn vrijgelaten: "Israeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was freed on Wednesday after serving an 18-year prison term for revealing secrets that exposed Israel as one of the world's top atomic powers. Waving and flashing V-for-victory signs, Vanunu was greeted outside Ashkelon's Shikma Prison by dozens of cheering supporters who hailed him as a "peace hero." An equal number of counter-demonstrators branded him a traitor."
