Action alert - Save Rosia Montana!

Any NGO with an interest in an issue directly or indirectly related to Gabriel’s project should register to become a consulted party for Rosia Montana’s EIA
Gabriel Resources, the Canadian junior mining company that wishes to realize Europe’s largest open cast gold mine in Rosia Montana intends to submit the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in early summer 2004. In the event that the Romanian authorities consequently grant the environmental license and if left unchallenged, than construction may effectively begin.
The realization of this project means the destruction of Rosia Montana. This includes the destruction of unique archaeological and patrimonial treasures, the destruction of two densely inhabited valleys, the destruction 1600 ha of forests and farming land, the destruction of ten churches and nine cemeteries and the expropriation of the locals refusing to leave. All this destruction is required for a project with an ever more destructive effect: a vast cyanide tailing pond and four large pits.
There exists wide opposition to this project and in particular a great solidarity for Rosia Montana’s locals refusing to leave.
Romania is a EU accession country and Gabriel’s EIA including the procedure itself will have to strictly meet the relevant EU norms and directives. This means that any NGO with an interest in an issue directly or indirectly related to Gabriel’s project may register to become a consulted party for Rosia Montana’s EIA. NGOs that register will have an important say in the final decision process. Registering is absolutely free of any costs. What it means is that all consulted parties will regularly receive information and will be consulted.
To register as an official party wishing to be consulted simply send an official e-mail or fax to:

Your message must include just one line and that is that you wish to register as a consulted party for the Rosia Montana EIA process and your letter should include why you wish to be consulted (i.e because you are an environmental organization and thus have environmental concerns, because you are a patrimonial organization and have patrimonial concerns, because you are a human rights organization and have human rights concerns, because you’re a mining specialist and have mining concerns, etc). You can check whether you have been registered by visiting www.mappm.ro and click the Rosia Montana box on the home page.
