Verbijstering in buitenland over asielsbeleid
gerrit - 19.02.2004 02:08

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3494627.stm

In het bericht wordt onder het kopje
'Critical' ook melding gemaakt van weerstand tegen het besluit en veroordeling door internationale mensenrechtenorganisatie HRI:

(citaat:)

The Dutch Council of Churches and a large number of mayors have been campaigning against the new law.

"Many asylum seekers live in critical situations. They have physical and
mental problems, their families have been broken up and there is insecurity in their home countries," said the Council of Churches in a letter of protest to the government.

The New York-based group Human Rights Watch has condemned the bill, saying it would violate international standards by sending rejected asylum seekers - including children - back to unsafe areas, such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Chechnya.

"The Dutch government's proposals... signal a serious departure from the Netherlands' historic role as a leader in human rights protection in Europe," the group said in a report.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Dutchman Ruud Lubbers, has also expressed concern.

Balkenende rechtser dan Fortuyn?
Buchan - 20.02.2004 12:45

"Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's government has gone further than the policies of controversial anti-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn, who was shot dead ahead of parliamentary elections in 2002.

Fortuyn favoured an amnesty for asylum seekers already in the Netherlands."

Zo zou Pim het niet gewild hebben

Scapegoat
Perantau - 21.02.2004 13:19

The fact of the matter is,that the ruling elite
in the Netherlands mainly consists of greedy ,
selfish and sometimes even fraudulent people ,who don't want to share their wealth anymore with the working majority.

But feelings of resentment that naturally follow, are instead focused upon ""the foreigner"" as the main cause of all social problems.
This mechanism is strengthened by both politicians
and the media alike.
Such an attitude might be explained in part by the ""calvinist"" tradition in the Netherlands,
that strongly promotes loyalty and obedience towards
the state or whoever is in power.
Although churches are empty and God is virtually
""dead" in Holland, this relic of calvinism still
funcions as a strong unifying factor that both
pleases believers and non-believers.

For this reason the state is able to introduce
the most bizar and ruthless policies without facing
significant opposition from the part of society.
The fact that the Netherlands still considers itself as
a leading nation in the defence of human rights,
is only a ridiculous example of self-deceit.
