Join them in Ahaus on Sunday + February 5
Ahaus anti-nuclear groups - 16.01.2004 16:41

The Münsterland anti-nuclear initiatives will continue and expand their protests. Next Sunday, 18 January, at 2 pm, there will be the traditional Sunday stroll at the Ahaus nuclear waste dump just across the NL border. On 5 February there will be a demonstration in front of Ahaus town hall to urge the council to take a clear stand against nuclear transports planned for this year.

There’s been another anti-nuclear demonstration at the Ahaus interim waste storage dump in Germany just across the NL border. In pouring rain, between 50 and 60 protesters from Ahaus and the wider Münsterland region blockaded the access to the spent fuel rod dump in the afternoon/evening of 14 January. The main gate was blocked for an hour, without any arrests being made; on the previous occasion 15 activists were detained. Earlier there had been a spontaneous demonstration in the Ahaus town centre.

The opposition groups say anger in the area in growing and so is protest against the announced plans to take 18 Castor caskets with spent fuel rods to Ahaus from Rossendorf near Dresden, a trip of about 600 kms by rail through densely populated parts of German.

The activists hope to increase pressure on politicians to cancel the totally superfluous and highly dangerous nuclear transports. They say the Ahaus town administration and the state and federal governments have a duty to oppose them.

”Obviously the federal government has no concept for safe disposal of nuclear waste,” says a joint statement by the groups. “Instead it wants to cart the highly radioactive waste, which will radiate for tens of thousands of years, painlessly through the republic and then to transport it into a final storage facility that might exist 30 years from now. We emphatically reject this nuclear waste tourism and demand the immediate switching off of all nuclear installations. It is intolerable for new waste to be produced incessantly for which there is no disposal.”

Sunday stroll and town hall demo in in Ahaus

The Münsterland anti-nuclear initiatives will continue and expand their protests. Next Sunday, 18 January, at 2 pm, there will be the traditional Sunday stroll at the dump. On 5 February there will be a demonstration in front of Ahaus town hall to urge the council to take a clear stand against the planned transports.
