WTO-conferenties mislukt, eerste reacties.

WTO zakt door z'n hoeven
(WTO.Flop nr. 35, 15/09/03

"WTO talks collapsed" (CNN, 14 september 23 uur NL tijd)
"World Trade Talk Collapse"(BBC-website 15/09/03)

Ja, meneer Brinkhorst, welkom terug in ons midden.

2) Press release Both ENDS, Milieudefensie and SOMO
Sunday September 14 2003, 18:06

“No agreement is better than a bad agreement”

Both ENDS, Milieudefensie and SOMO are delighted that developing countries have not yielded to the pressure of the European Union and the United States. The EU and the USA have not succeeded in disrupting the alliance of developing countries, united in the Group of 22, the ACP and the LDC’s.

The unity amongst the development countries and civil society against the so-called ‘new’ issues has lead to the removal of these subjects of the agenda. Myriam Vander Stichele (SOMO): ‘It is now important to look at the reality of multinational corporations, that dominate world trade and investment, to the detriment of developing countries and their populations’.

Cancun has shown that developing countries are capable of negotiating as equal partners and have constructively contributed to improving the multilateral trading system. The suspension of the negotiations is attributed to the inflexible attitude of the EU and the USA and explicitly not to developing countries. Burghard Ilge (NGO representative in the Dutch delegation, Both ENDS): ‘The European Commission has turned the negotiations into a unacceptable poker-game and it is now up to the national and European parliaments to hold them accountable’.

The Cancun negotiations on market access for agricultural and non-agricultural products have shown that alternatives that promote sustainable development have to be found instead of the continuous pursuit of purely free trade. The negligence of the cotton initiative of four African countries shows once more that the true agenda of developing countries is being ignored.

During the negotiations numerous actions have been carried out around the convention centre, the city of Cancun, as well as in the rest of the world. Anne van Schaik (Friends of the Earth Netherlands): ‘These actions have shown once more the opposition against the plans of the WTO’.

We hope that the failure of the Ministerial Conference in Cancun will encourage all parties to bring a sincere development perspective in the trade debate.

WTO Derailed at "Second Seattle" in Cancun

Food First Daily Report from the WTO in Cancun #7 September 14, 2003 by Peter Rosset

We had been told by one of the official negotiators that the talks were on the verge of collapse because of agriculture and the so-called "new issues," and that it was all but over. He told us that the massive protests in the streets and the death of Mr. Lee had been key factors in creating a climate in which Third World countries felt they could once again stand up to pressure from the U.S. and the European Union, just like in Seattle.

Yesterday, Saturday, was the most incredible day of protest any of us had ever experienced. From multiple actions by credentialed and non-credentialed protestors inside the security zone -- the latter after having "infiltrated" into the zone -- to the powerfully moving farmer-indigenous people-trade union-youth protest at the fence. The hundreds of journalists who were present marveled at our collective ability to do the unexpected, to turn promised violence into moving peace, and to make a statement so powerful that the WTO could not hope to resist.
