INTERNATIONAL BOYCOTT OF COKE LAUNCHED

An International Boycott of Coke has kicked off in protest of Coca Cola's alleged complicity in the murders of Columbian bottling plant worker organizers, and Coke's disregard for enviornmental and health standards in India.
June 22 marked the beginning of an international boycott of Coca-Cola called by the Colombian food and beverage trade union SINALTRAINAL to protest what the union considers to be corporate complicity in the murders of nine union members and officers over the last thirteen years. The occasion was marked by marches, rallies and direct action in Australia Ireland England and of course Atlanta. SINALTRAINAL has long maintained that Coke is among the most notorious employers in Colombia and that the company maintains open relations with murderous death squads as part of a program to intimidate trade union leaders. The Latin American Social Forum has issued a Declaration to stop Coke's violence in Colombia and the world, detailing a comprehensive redress plan for the victims and a plan of action, including a year-long boycott.
Colombia Indymedia CokeWatch SINALTRAINAL has filed a law suit against Coca-Cola and its Colombian bottling plants under the US Alien Torts Act in cooperation with the United Steelworkers of America and the International Labor Rights Fund Coke's toxic reputation in India:
THE Greenpeace Environment Trust, the Indian arm of the international NGO, has urged the Kerala State Pollution Control Board to serve a 15-day closure notice on Coca-Cola India's bottling plant at Plachimada in Palakkad district due to reports of contaminated land and drinking water from Coke's toxic sludge by-product.
Coke and Pepsi have exploited India's weak government standards for health and enviornmental regulations instead of upholding global standards.
Centre for Science and Environment is calling for independent testing of pesticide residue found in bottled water and soda products produced by Coca Cola and Pepsi. The previous industry sponsored testing found favorable results for the bottling companies.

Uit dit bericht wordt niet duidelijk of deze boycot nu plaatsvind in Columbia, Latijns-Amerika, of de Indiaase deelstaat Colombo. Het enige moment rept men van Latin-American Social Forum, daarna over hun "Toxic reputation" in India.
Enige verduidelijking zoude wel zo fijn zijn.

Evenwel knap surrealistische actie: volgens mij vormen extracten van (gefermenteerde) Coca-bladeren sinds de uitvinding van dat Gore Anti-Roest drankje onderdeel van het "geheime recept" van de "Coca-Cola Co."
Deze week maakte Greenpeace een belangrijke overwinning bekend van Indianen in het Amazone-gebied tegen een Maleisische firma in houtkap.
Evenwel zal ik nooit het beeld vergeten van Indianen in het Amazone-regenwoud die, rondom een knoeperd van een oude, rode Coca-Cola koelkast op diesel-aggregraat, gezellig levende insekten zaten te kanen.
Met een tak sprinkhanen en krekels uit de bomen peuren, en na deze diertjes als variant op "borrelnootjes" te hebben gegeten, (krak-krak deed hun huidpantser) spoelden ze het
weg met dat smerige, roestbruine Coca-suikerwater.
ALLES aan hun "natuurlijke biotoop" was, zoals het was ver voor "de beschaving" met de rubber-planters haar intrede deed. Maar dat Surrealistische Rode Bakbeest van een Cola-koelkast midden in de jungle, terwijl de Indianen insekten-smikkelend een of andere Braziliaanse voetbalwedstrijd op de radio volgden: ik dacht in een Sketch van Monty Python's Circus Avidao terecht te zijn gekomen, maar het was toch echt een BBC-documentaire.

Is er een boycot van Coca Cola in Nederland, of zijn er andere acties tegen deze organisatie gepland? Wellicht is dit ook een kans voor de Nederlandse vakbeweging om haar internationale solidariteit te tonen.

Het is dus een oproep van de Colombiaanse vakbond om die boycot international (wereldwijd) op te volgen.
In Nederland wordt al jaren door principeel levende mensen geen Coca Cola meer gedronken. Helaas is de boycot hier in Nederland voorlasnog iets dat niet door een vakbond wordt opgepikt. Als krities consument is dit bericht alleen maar extra aansporing dat Coca Cola niet thuis hoort op je boodschappenlijstje.

Waar baseer je dit op? Ik acht het niet onmogelijk. Leg maar eens een stuiver, een stuk vlees, of iets anders roestigs in (coca) cola en wacht dan 12-24 uur. Resultaat is binnen enkele ogenblikken al op te merken. Ik weet niet in hoeverre dit het geval is bij andere cola's. Dit is voor mij momenteel de hoofdreden om (coca) cola te boycotten.

Er bestaat geen Indiase deelstaat Colombo. Wel heeft Sri Lanka een hoofdstad van die naam.
Cola werd aanvankelijk inderdaad bereid met toevoeging van cocabladeren, vandaar de naam Coca-Cola. Daar valt op internet of in een ouwerwetsche encyclopedie vast wel meer over te vinden. Met het verdwijnen (verbieden) van het toen algemeen verkrijgbare opwekkende middel cocaïne uit de apotheek omstreeks begin 20e eeuw verdween het ingrediënt ook uit de cola. Het opwekkende effect zal wel vervangen zijn door die van suiker, ook niet bepaald goed voor de volksgezondheid maar ook daar is al het nodige over geschreven.
Dat verhaaltje over de roestverdrijvende kracht van cola duikt steeds weer op als zou het "dus" hetzelfde doen in je maag. Helaas bestaat dat "dus" niet. Er wordt hierboven ook niet opgeroepen voor een boycot vanwege je tere westerse maagje, maar vanwege de smerige maatschappelijke praktijken van het bedrijf Coca-Cola. Voor de smerige maatschappelijke praktijken van de suikerindustrie zou je er bijv. Galeano nog eens op na kunnen slaan.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) India has found that Coke and Pepsi are selling soft drinks with a pesticide content 30-40 times higher than EU guidelines permit. The story can be found here and here among various other sources. Coke and Pepsi have threatened to sue CSE over the findings claiming that the tests should be carried by an international body rather an the India based NGO.
