16/6: debate LIVE: "A Return Flight for Free" De Balie, Amsterdam - 16.06.2003 16:58
Monday june 16, 8pm till about 10.30pm C.E.T. RealVideo http://live.dds.nl/1.ram Bulgarian and Dutch researchers present the results from surveys on illegal Bulgarian workers and discuss with policymakers how to tackle the problem. WWW.BALIE.NL (Nederlands: http://www.indymedia.nl/nl/2003/06/12333.shtml ) Nowadays Bulgarians can travel to the Netherlands without a visa. Many use the opportunity to earn some money. The lucky ones are streetmusicians. The unlucky end up as prostitutes. Others are being recruited by sub-contractors as workers in sewing workshops, the docks or greenhouses. They live in overcrowded pension houses, where they pay extortionate prices for a bed. Now and then the Dutch authorities take the matter up. The police arrests at random a group of Bulgarians and sends them back on a chartered airplane. The guestspeakers are Petija Kabakchieva, Bulgarian sociologist who works on a report on Bulgarian immigrants, Dirk Kloosterboer, who investigated the situation of Bulgarian workers in the greenhouses, Ruth Hopkins, who wrote a report on trafficking of women and talked to Bulgarian victims, Bob Hiddinga, lawyer in The Hague who gives legal assistance to people who are threatened to be expelled. The discussion will be conducted by journalist Yascha Lange.
