Amina Lawal, een 30-jarige moslim uit Nigeria, werd veroordeeld tot de dood door steniging door een sharia-rechtbank. Op 19 augustus 2002 oordeelde het sharia-Hof van Beroep dat het doodvonnis van Amina Lawal zal worden gehandhaafd. Amina bekende naar verluidt dat zij een buitenechtelijke zwangerschap had ondergaan. Zwangerschap buiten het huwelijk is binnen de sharia-wetgeving in de staat Katsina voldoende bewijs voor een veroordeling wegens overspel. Amina had geen advocaat tijdens de eerste rechtszitting. Bij haar hoger beroep wordt Amina ondersteund door Nigeriaanse en internationale vrouwen- en mensenrechtenorganisaties, waaronder Amnesty International.

Your Excellency,
I am writing to express my concern about the sentence of death by stoning which was passed on Ms Amina Lawal, as well as other death sentences under Sharia law.
It is hard to believe that Nigerian citizens, living in a democracy, could be sentenced to such a cruel, inhumane and degrading punishment, which runs completely counter to the International Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane and Degrading Treatment and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
I urge you to use your wisdom of office and growing international respect to ensure that these sentences are not carried out.
Please ensure that all citizens of Nigeria - men and women - are protected by the rule of law, and in accordance with international standards of human rights, from such cruel, inhumane and degrading punishments as the sentence passed on Ms Amina Lawal.

Today, June 3 is the date set by the the Upper Sharia Court of Appeal in Katsina State (the highest court)to hear Amina's appeal against her death sentence..
If this appeal has a negative outcome there are still two possibilities for federal court.
The president has also the possibility for Amnesty, if Amina's
verdict is upheld by the Federal Supreme Court.
So let us will/hope/pray that the court will show wisdom and mercy.
