It is evident, from early reports coming out of the area, that the Indonesian military is intent on subjecting the population of Aceh to the same 'punishment' as it inflicted on the people of East Timor. The reported killings, the razing of Acehnese villages and the burning of more than 200 schools in the first few days of operations are consistent with the 'threat of a beating' given two weeks earlier by the Indonesian Co-Ordinating Minister for Politics and Security, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, when he 'proudly' announced that he expected the number of internally displaced persons in Aceh , as a result of the impending military operations, to exceed 100,000. This openly stated 'intention' to inflict as much suffering as possible on the Acehnese people clearly shows that the present destruction and massacres were premeditated and planned well in advance. We call on the world community to make the Indonesian military aware that its actions in Aceh will be closely monitored and that any crimes against humanity will be brought before the International Criminal Court. The wanton killings and total devastation for which the Indonesian military is famous must not be allowed to be repeated in Aceh. If President Megawati is not a puppet of the Indonesian Military, she would exercise her supreme authority to over rule the power of generals and allow the resumption of negotiations to take place under the auspices of a neutral third party and without pre-conditions by both sides. We urge the Indonesian Government to immediately withdraw their troops from Aceh. May God show mercy to the brave people of Aceh.
