MANIFESTATION AND COUNTER SUMMIT
JUNE 19-20-21 THESSALONIKI
ANOTHER EUROPE IS POSSIBLE!
EU summit is going to take place in Thessaloniki Greece between 20-22 June 2003. This is going to be an extremely important meeting of the EU leaders. After the severe crisis caused by the illegal imperialist war on Iraq, EU is seeking for a new role in the global status. At the same time inside EU social and political rights are under threat.
Greek Social Forum has decided to organize a number of international events during the summit. We want to demonstrate against global war led by the USA and Great Britain, against Iraq occupation and loathing, against the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Furthermore, we want to protest against the undermining of social insurance system in Europe, against unemployment, flexibility and social exclusion, against racism, sexism and oppression, against environmental destruction in Europe and worldwide. In addition, we want to discuss about the new global situation, our alternatives to neoliberalism, the perspectives of the movement.
We would like to underline that it’s the first time an international “no global’ event is going to happen in southeastern Europe. This proves that our movement is not limited in western European countries. It also gives the opportunity to Balkan, eastern European and Turkish movements to make visible their demands. That’s why we believe that it is necessary to inform all the people that will participate in this summit about the second summit of the European Social Forum in Paris-St.Denis and the one of the Global Social Forum in India. This briefing, we believe, it would be best to take place during the summit in Thessaloniki and by delegations, which are involved in organizing the two events.
Greek Social Forum organizes:
o On the 19th of June a demonstration against fortress Europe, against racism and xenophobia.
o On the 20th of June a various events day. This includes happenings, concerts and civil disobedience actions.
o On the 21st of June a huge demonstration with the participation of trade unions.
o A counter summit from the 18th until the 21st of June.
After long negotiation with the government, Greek Social Forum is now able to announce that logistics infrastructure is going to be provided to international demonstrators.
Greek Social Forum has known a tremendous growth in the last months. We have to admit that even the most optimists hadn't expected that in such a short time the Forum would have become a significant force in Greek society. More than 100 associations participate in the Forum (trade unions, political parties and organizations, NGO, antiracist, feminist and environmental associations etc). Local Forums have been formed in more than 40 cities all around Greece. Tens of thousands demonstrated against the war under the Forum flags.
