TONIGHT: AM'DAM FILM NIGHT. REFUGEES IN AUSTR
Amex - 04.03.2003 17:07

TONIGHT: DINSDAG 4 MAART 20:30 uur @ VRANKRIJK, AMSTERDAM: Info-avond over Woomera, detentie- centrum voor vluchtelingen in Australie + de
film 'Waking Up The Nation: The Freedom Bus'

TUESDAY MARCH 4, 20:30 hrs,
Vrankrijk, spuistraat 216, Amsterdam.

On midnight of January 1st 2003, four activists stormed the Woomera centre in the
South Australian desert and broke out some refugees innocently imprisoned there for the last 2-3 years.
After an intesive 48-hour hunt by the authorities all the escaped refugees were found, and the 4 activists have been sent to jail.
The film & info night at Vrankrijk is
a benefit event to raise some money for legal
costs and help for the refugees and the activists involved.

The film 'Waking Up The Nation':
During the Australian summer of 2002, a group
of people concerned about the human rights abuses of refugees in detention centres decided to embark on a 2-months/10'000 kilometres journey around the continent.
Their mission was to visit as many people in
the camps as possible, and to educate the
communities in the small towns on their route.
'Waking up The Nation' takes you on this inspiring journey as the strange mix of
anarchists, house-wifes and teenagers have
their confrontations with cops, detention centre guards, and angry small-town locals.
Most importantly the film introduces you
to many of the hundreds of people still innocently imprisoned in the camps, and exposes some of the human rights abuses by
the private corporation which runs the camps,
and the government that supports it....
something is happening in Australia's deserts
that people should be ashamed of.

Talking about the current situation of Australia's racist refugee policy will be
a member of the Refugee Freedom Bus who shot
'Waking Up The Nation' and who was also involved in the recent breakout at Woomera 3 weeks ago.
