Een zojuist via de "Campaign Against Sanctions on Iraq" geopenbaard rapport van de Verenigde Naties, zegt dat dertig procent van de Iraakse kinderen van vijf jaar of jonger (1,26 miljoen kinderen) het risico loopt te sterven in geval van oorlog in Irak. Het document is opgesteld door het Verenigde Naties 'Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' (OCHA) op 7 januari jl.

Andere conclusies die het rapport trekt is dat de ineenstorting van de publieke voorzieningen in Irak, als gevolg van oorlog, "kan lijden tot een humanitaire ramp groter dan VN-agentschappen en andere hulporganisaties aankunnen".

De schatting is dat "bij benadering tien miljoen mensen bloodgesteld zullen worden aan een hoge mate van voedselonveiligheid, aan verplichte verhuizing (vluchten) of op directe wijze met militaire acties in aanraking komen." Zestig procent van de mensen zal geen beschikking hebben tot voldoende drinkwater.

Het document is ter beschikking gesteld door VN-personeel. Volgens CASI omdat zij "geloven dat mogelijke humanitaire gevolgen van oorlog voor iedereen van belang is, en dat daarom dit in het openbaar bediscussierd moeten worden".
