Over de hele wereld en in veertien plaatsen in Nederland gaan zaterdag activisten de straat op om de Internationale Niet-Winkeldag te vieren. De Internationale Niet-Winkeldag is een jaarlijks terugkerende actiedag en verovert langzaam maar zeker de wereld. Nadat de Canadees Ted Dave in 1992 de eerste Internationale Niet-Winkeldag (Buy Nothing Day) uitriep als een min of meer individuele actie, werd het idee in 1993 overgenomen door groepen in de Verenigde Staten, Engeland en Ierland. In 1995 werd Niet-Winkeldag ook in Nederland geintroduceerd. In de jaren daarna sloten ook groepen in Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland, Japan, Zweden, België, Noorwegen, Duitsland, Finland, Polen en Slovenië zich bij de internationale campagne aan.
Omslag (Werkplaats voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling) coordineert de campage in Nederland en meldt op haar website: Een consumptiegoeroe op stelten met vleugels van dollars roept op onnodige dingen te kopen. Reuzenfiguren 'Reclame' en 'Materialisme' bewegen de levende marionet 'Consument' tot overbodige aankopen. Rent-a-friend of huur een koopcoach (arena agency, ISO 2000 certificaat). Er zijn gratis proefmonsters verkrijgbaar van het nieuwe product 'Niets'. In veel plaatsen zijn kramen waar 'ooit gekregen maar nooit gebruikte cadeautjes' geruild kunnen worden. Geef knuffels een tweede leven, de Waarheid over Sint Nicolaas, een Koopwijzer met tips voor verantwoord kopen, straatinterviews en tal van andere activiteiten brengen de Internationale Niet-Winkeldag tot leven.

Proponents of 'Buy Nothing Day' warn against excess consumerism.
MINNEAPOLIS and ST. LOUIS -- Today, one of the busiest shopping days
of the year, several people plan to go to Nicollet Mall and gleefully
dance down store aisles with shopping carts.
But their carts will be empty.
Instead of filling up on after-Thanksgiving sales, the
BodyCartography Project will be performing with their carts between
11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to promote Buy Nothing Day, an 11-year-old grass-
roots campaign to tame consumerism one day at a time, beginning with
the season opener.
Similar groups will be out all over the world during the holiday
shopping season, spreading their message that consumerism -- which
some describe as the over-consumption of goods, resources and
services -- is wasteful, harmful to the Earth and morally vapid.
They will be armed with marketing materials that include posters,
handbills, stickers and news releases, supplied by Adbusters Media
Foundation, a Vancouver, B.C.-based social activist group.
Buy Nothing Day's proponents suggest making alternate gifts, such as
knitting a hat, giving away a valuable possession, hand-making soap
or candles, buying a used book, volunteering or donating to charity.
In St. Louis, area demonstrators dragging symbollic oversized charge
cards and handing out leaflets proclaiming "Love Does Not Mean Debt"
descended on local retail centers on what is traditionally the
season's busiest day.
Chained to an enormous Visa card, O'Fallon, Ill., computer technician
Josh Cunningham carried his post-Thanksgiving message to the shopping
masses Friday morning outside the St. Louis Galleria:
If you don't need it, don't buy it. If you think you need it, think
again.
"Spread the love, not the debt," said Paul MacFarlane, who helped
organize the local event.
Kalle Lasn, the day's initiator, estimates that up to a million
people in 55 countries will be taking part in what is the 11th such
annual event, with mass cutting-up of credit cards, barter fairs and
the use of alternative currencies.
Lasn said the day had a particular relevance this year because
President Bush has told Americans that it is their "patriotic duty"
to buy.

Rampage of thieving feared on 'Buy Nothing Day.'
VICTORIA -- City police say they fear Buy Nothing Day scheduled for
today may degenerate into Steal Something Day.
Buy Nothing Day is a day proponents have set aside as a protest
against commercialism.
A more radical faction has dubbed the occasion Steal Something Day,
police Sgt. Alan Cochrane said yesterday.
Last year, groups of rowdies swept through downtown Victoria,
stealing merchandise, terrorizing shoppers and diners.
Cochrane expects legitimate demonstrations and expect the Buy Nothing
Day protest -- supported by such groups as the B.C. Government and
Services Employees Union -- to be peaceful and pointed.
But Cochrane said radicals are urging people to steal from
corporations, steal from wealthy individuals and commit a variety of
illegal acts instead of simply not buying things.
"They're trying to make theft a political statement instead of a
crime," he said.
