Workshops on financial markets 17.10.2002 17:21
In order to aid activist working on the current crisis in Latin America I propose to organize two workshops to develop more in debt knowledge of the functioning of current financial markets. It is not meant to be a purely academic exercise but a functional toolbox to understand current debates and proposals of the IMF. Workshops on financial markets The first meeting will be on 30 October and the second meeting on 13 November at 19:30. The language will be English and the location will be at the LAC (Latijns Amerika Centrum) Nieuwe Herengracht 29 located in the center of Amsterdam. I will provide a reader one week before the start of the workshop. If possible everything will be free of charge, otherwise it will not exceed 3 Euros per person. Workshop 1: Money and the development of financial systems - What are the functions of money? - What are the main features of financial systems and how do they relate to the wider economy and political structures? - The period of deregulation, privatization and the re-emergence of capital mobility - Globalization of financial markets and the theory of the anorexic company Workshop 2: Neo liberal politics and the current crisis in Latin America - A comparison of the debt driven development strategy in Mexico and South Korea; why did the debt crisis start in Mexico? - The neo liberal development strategy, changes in investment patterns and the theory of casino capitalism. - The lessons of the Asian crisis and contagion in the era of Globalization. - Argentina and the current proposal of the IMF.
