PRISTINA -- Thousands of trade union supporters gathered in Kosovo´s capital Pristina on Thursday to voice fears about privatisation in the Yugoslav province due to start later this year.

"We heard that when the privatisation starts, they (authorities) will kick all of us old workers out," said Shukrie Rexha, 45, who works in a Pristina factory.
The protesters, who had travelled to Pristina from across the province in buses, carried Albanian flags and banners representing the mining industry -- one of the mainstays of Kosovo´s economy in the old
Yugoslavia.
A World Bank report last year said half the population lived in poverty.
