Transnational Institute Forum: Electricity Privatisation - Debunking the Myths Date: 26 May 2002 Time: 15.00 Venue: De Burcht, Vakbondsmuseum Henri Polaklaan 9, Amsterdam Electricity privatisation is often portrayed as a means of improving the living conditions of ordinary people, making service cheaper and more efficient, being good for the environment and beneficial to democracy. Real experiences, however, contradict these promises. During the past years, from New Zealand to California and from India to Brazil, the world has witnessed a series of catastrophic blackouts, skyrocketing tariffs, growing corruption and the collapse of the Enron Corporation. On Sunday, 26 May 2002, the Transnational Institute (TNI) will be hosting a public meeting on the privatisation of electricity and the myths surrounding this global phenomenon. Speakers include Hildebrando Vélez (Colombia) and Gino Govender (South Africa). Daniel Chavez, Manager of the TNI Energy Project, will also be speaking and will present TNI´s newest publication: LIGHTS OFF! - debunking the myths of power privatisation. Ophelia Cowell (TNI, Indonesia) will chair the meeting. Website: http://www.tni.org |
