Globalisation and Sustainability: Rio+1- Transnational Institute - 21.05.2002 13:32
Transnational Institute Forum Globalisation and Sustainability: Rio+10 Date 24 May 2002 Time: 20:00 Venue: De Burcht, Vakbondmuseum Henri Polaklaan #9 Amsterdam Ten years after the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, heads of states, civil society organisations, environmental groups and business leaders will meet once again -this time in Johannesburg- in order to formulate a global action plan to help foster sustainable development. But what, throughout the last 10 years, has been accomplished? The last decade´s experience of economic globalisation has meant increased economic and political power for multinational corporations, the opening of markets in the South and greater restrictions on government´s ability to determine national development priorities. What has this mean for the environment, developing countries, small farmers and the bulk of the world´s poor? Does the process of economic globalisation help or undermine sustainable development? Join TNI Associate Director Susan George and TNI Fellows Praful Bidwai (renowned journalist from India) and Pauline Tiffen (Fair Trade Movement, UK), on Friday, 24 May 2002 for a public discussion on the topic of market-led development and the implications for a sustainable future. From regional and global perspectives, these experts will expose the dangers of economic globalisation for sustainable development and will open the floor to alternatives. The meeting will be chaired by Myriam vander Stichele from SOMO/ TNI. |
