EXTRA : DANISH EUROPEAN COUNCIL MP SEEKS WAR CRIMES TRIAL FOR SHARON !
* A Danish member of the European Parliament said on Friday - May 3rd - 2002, that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon should be tried for war crimes against the Palestinians. Torben Lund told reporters he will press the Parliament and the EU´s foreign policy chief Javier Solana for an inquiry into Israel´s assault on the Jenin refugee camp. Following Sharon´s refusal to allow a UN investigation, Lund said:
"This must lead to an international tribunal that can look into what happened in Jenin, and Sharon´s role in the operation." The Danish EU parliamentarian added that "Israel is the only country in the world that shows such indifference to the legitimate concerns of the international community."

De Verenigde Staten zullen de handtekening van president Bill Clinton onder het verdrag voor het Internationaal Strafhof ongedaan maken. De Verenigde Naties krijgen een formele aankondiging dat de VS het verdrag niet zullen ratificeren. Dat heeft minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Powell zondag gezegd.
Clinton ondertekende het verdrag op zijn laatste dag in het Witte Huis, maar zond het niet ter ratificatie naar de Senaat. David Scheffer, oud-ambassadeur oorlogsmisdaden, noemt het ´terugtrekken´ van de handtekening een ´dramatisch moment in de geschiedenis van het volkenrecht´.
Naar verwachting zal de regering-Bush ook aankondigen dat het zich niet gebonden voelt door de Weense Conventie uit 1969. Die verbiedt landen onder meer om verdragen te ondermijnen die een land zelf niet heeft ondertekend.
