resistting evictions in am*dam (english) dagx2002 - 19.03.2002 10:35
3 hours before the start off the ´usual´ eviction circus in amsterdam today , tuesday 19 march. a rather small number of squatting activist managed to completely surprise the riotcops with a short standoff in front of one of the houses to be evicted. poster glued alover mcmurder next to vijzelstraat 5 although the amsterdam police had stationed a watercannon and a caterpillar on dam square for almost the whole night, they still were not in state to prevent the squatters from building burning barricades in front of their house. the first wave of cops arriving was welcomed with a load of paintbombs and stones. the police, completely confused, first made attemts to stop them, but seen the rage and dedication of the activist , they quickly refrained from the idea. several police cars and busses , as well as their crew have been covered in paint.. rumors go, that it was even possible to get one of the paintbombs thrown INSIDE a police van. disturbing news is that cops have pulled out their GUNS at several occasions. luckily no shot was fired. on a side line the windows of the neighbouring mcmurder has been covered with the attached poster. like in most non-non-violent actions the urban guerilla managed to vanished into ´the void´ before daylight, also because the quite terrified cops did not dare pursue them PS: as we just heard, neither on martelaarsgracht (the second house in the row), although there was fierce resistance (hundreds of paintbombs thrown at the cops from inside). nobody got arrested because , also here the partisans of housing rights had magically disapeared into nothing once the cops finally made it into the house...
