200 miljoen dollar aan importen zullen aan heffingen worden onderworpen, omdat ze uit de bezette Palestijnse gebieden komen. In 2000 is er een verdrag getekend tussen Israel en de EU dat lage of geen heffingen toestaat voor importen uit Israel. Duidelijk is nu dat (producten uit) Golan, Gaza of de WestBank (inclusief Oost Jerusalem) daar niet onder vallen.
Ook het misleidenderwijs etiketteren van goederen uit de bezette gebieden als "made in Israel" zal niet meer worden getolereerd.
Israel heeft beloofd voortaan de plaats van origine te vermelden, evenals de nationaliteit.
Volgens Israels vicepremier Ehud Olmert is hiermee de dreiging tegen de Israelische importen naar de 25 EU-landen afgewend.
De Israelische extremisten aan de verkeerde kant van de groene lijn konden dit uiteraard niet echt waarderen...

"BERN - Switzerland is to slap provisional taxes on Israeli exports suspected of coming from Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, a Swiss newspaper said Sunday.
"In over 30 cases frontier guarantee payments have been demanded from importers of 'made in Israel' goods, according to senior customs officials," the NZZ am Sonntag said.
The Swiss government subsequently confirmed to the Swiss media that the taxes collected would be kept by the authorities "until the precise origin of the products is established".
Under an accord concluded by the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), products exported by Israel to Switzerland are exempt from customs duties.
However, merchandise produced by Israel in the territories is excluded from the agreement."

EU team to discuss Israel's inclusion in wider Europe
" A European Union team is to hold negotiations with Foreign Ministry officials in two weeks on Israel's participation in the Wider European initiative, in what is believed to be a final push to wrap things up before a new European Commission takes office in November.
The negotiations – the fifth round between Israel and the EU – are slated for August 24 in Jerusalem.
The Wider Europe/New Neighborhood Policy is an initiative to upgrade the EU's relations with a circle of some 14 countries bordering the enlarged EU, with the ultimate goal being to allow free access to and from the EU of goods, services, capital, and people from the countries involved in the initiative.
Before admission to Wider Europe is granted, the candidate countries have to meet certain benchmark requirements on a number of political and economic issues. European officials have not hidden that Israel's involvement in the program will not be divorced from whether or not there is diplomatic progress in the Middle East. "
