Deense regering onder vuur na WL onthullingen
Groenland 4ever - 10.01.2011 14:46

Politiken.DK: [Danish] government involved in double-dealing regarding CIA flights: documents reveal new aspects of the political manoeuvrings around illegal prisoner transports.

The government, with former Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller in the lead, was involved in double-dealing in 2008, when it was forced to investigate whether the CIA had used Danish airspace for secret prisoner transports. While the government had to promise parliament to ask critical questions to the U.S. regarding the flights, both Per Stig Møller and the former prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen let their top officials say the opposite to the American ambassador in London: the government wants silence, not answers, hoping the story will die down.

Oppositie wil een spoeddebat
Secreet - 10.01.2011 15:24

Socialists, SF and the Radicals requires Foreign Policy Committee convened in a hurry instead of waiting for the government's explanation of the first ordinary meeting on first February. Three parties can convene urgently Board.

Former Foreign Minister Lykketoft, now Social Democrat vice-chairman of the board, demanding an explanation from both Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen (V) and Foreign Minister Lene Espersen (K).

"It is always seriously if the government gives parliament the wrong information," said Lykketoft.

(..)

SF'eren Nielsen points out that the case is also serious, because international law is violated if the Danish territory is used for transporting prisoners, such as a DR-removal suggest. It must have happened in Greenland and possibly in Copenhagen.

Former Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller (K) rejects certain that he made a double game. Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen (V) did not want to comment on the new disclosure of a document by James Cain.

The CIA's Danish connection
Malix - 10.01.2011 18:07

Following a Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) documentary entitled "The CIA's Danish connection", the government hastily contacted leading US officials in order to be able to tell the media that efforts were being made to address the situation.

Notwithstanding this, the center right coalition government and its far right support party managed to prevent an independent inquiry into the issue by agreeing to set up a 48 man strong working group. As predicted by left wing government opponents the findings of the working group were inconclusive as it could find no incriminating evidence against the US government. In addition, the Wikileaks cable shows a willingness by Per Stig Moeller to tailor his questions about rendition to the American's liking. However, the notion that the US would answer Moeller's prearranged questions was dropped as the US found it entirely inappropriate to discuss any security issue of this kind. Finally, after months of negotiation, former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, sent a letter to Moeller pledging to inform Denmark of any airspace violations in the future. After receiving this communication, Moeller, displayed his legendary hot temper at a press meeting where he raged: "this is entirely unacceptable and I won't accept this treatment from the United States." In spite of this, Cain writes that during a meeting in 2008, between Rice and Moeller, the former Foreign Minister thanked her profusely for her gracious letter which had taken the pressure off the Danish government regarding the issue.

Earlier today, Per Stig Moeller called an emergency meeting with government colleagues. It is expected that he will comment on the issue during the week.

PM silent on charges of double-dealing
Geluidsdemper - 10.01.2011 19:12

MONDAY, 10 JANUARY 2011 09:55 DV NEWS
Leaked documents suggest government was not interested in confronting US over CIA transports

The prime minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has refused to comment on the government’s role in the alleged illegal transport of CIA detainees over Danish airspace, including Greenland.

The issue appeared after Wikileaks published documents from the US Embassy in Copenhagen.

“I will not comment on leaked documents,” the PM told TV2. “The issue has been dealt with and the former foreign minister has answered questions about it in parliament.”

The leaked documents indicate that on the one hand, the government promised parliament to ask the US about CIA’s transfers of detainees while, on the other hand, telling the opposite to the then US ambassador in Denmark at the time.

Danish government officials, according to Politiken newspaper, made it clear to the Americans at the time that they wanted the issue to die away.

1,900 suspicious CIA flights in Danish airspa
Danish - 11.01.2011 01:51

Neither confirmed nor denied
CIA working group set up after Danmarks Radio (DR) in 2008 had brought the documentary program 'the CIA's Danish connection "which sought to demonstrate that the CIA had used Danish airspace for prisoner transports.

The group, which consisted of representatives of the Danish authorities, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands should review information about the alleged CIA flights in Danish airspace.

The conclusion was that the U.S. does not want to confirm or deny the information on up to 1,900 suspicious CIA flights through Danish airspace since 2001.

This despite the fact that Denmark since 2005, repeatedly failed to make clear to the Americans that it expected the CIA to respect Danish legislation.
1,900 suspicious CIA flights in Danish sky

Foreign Ministry officials will be forced to again consider whether the public will have access to Department investigation into whether the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has used Danish airspace for secret prisoner transports.

Parliamentary Ombudsman, Hans Gammeltoft-Hansen, states that the Ministry can not refuse to disclose the so-called CIA working group papers on the grounds that it is an independent authority.
