Stop Frontex at Brussels Airport | All Included - 19.10.2010 15:15
Frontex at Brussels Airport With its headquarters in Warsaw, the European agency Frontex is responsible for the border security of the European Union. In recent media coverage you will find Frontex patrolling the Mediterranean sea with military ships and airplanes cutting off the routes of migrants trying to reach Europe. With their small vessels migrants are forced now to seek more dangerous waters with even more of them drowning as a result. Migrants intercepted on their journey have been send back to countries like Libya without giving them an opportunity to apply for asylum. With these so-called push-back operations Frontex has repeatedly violated the Refugee Convention. Frontex's main aim is to stop any unregistrated migration going to Europe. Less known is that Frontex is also active at EU's air-borders. Also Brussels Airport participates in Frontex operational activities. Frontex provides training for border guards working on identification, introduces new technologies for the detection of undocumented migrants and coordinates deportation flights. Out of the public eye, Frontex started with so-called 'joint return operations' in which different EU countries take part. Brussels Airport is one of the airport being used for such charter deportations. For this purpose Frontex is planning to charter its 'own' aircrafts for deportation. Coming soon to Brussels Airport is the experiment with biometric or e-passports (electronic passports). Both Frontex Agency and Brussels Airport are partners in the Biometrics European Stakeholders Network. Biometric technologies are operational tools that can support border control by enhancing 'security' whilst enabling an easier and faster access to Europe through automated gates for EU-nationals. Many EU countries have started using biometrics in their passports that may already include facial recognition, fingerprints, or iris scans. Frontex is a leading force in the research and implementation of these new technologies forcing citizens to give up more and more of their privacy. And Frontex is leading a war on migration to protect EU-interest at all cost. We ask you to denounce these practices. And to support the right of migrants for freedom of movement. Stop Frontex, stop the hunt on migrants! No border camp Brussels
