Stanislav was the first and only non-local lawyer working for a long time directly on the territory of the Chechen republic. Just today, in particular, he had declared that he does not rule out the possibility of turning to an international court on the basis of the fact of the conditional early release of ex-colonel Budanov, who killed an 18 year old girl.
Stanislav conducted the case about the killing of Novaya gazeta journalist Igor Domnikov, since the year 2003 all cases that were initiated based on the materials of Anna Politkovskaya, the case of OMON employee S.V. Lapin (nickname “cadet”), who had committed atrocity in relation to the peaceful citizens of Chechnya. Markelos also was invlolved in cases about Nord-Ost and was the only lawyer who dared to do these cases. He was the first lawyer to go to the region of so called “hot spots” in the North Caucasus,Also he was the only lawyer who dared to have cases against state Russian state and who won them. He defended many anti-fascist against the nazi's and fascist state of Russia, now he is dead.
The attack happened just after the press conference of ex-colonel Budano where he was protesting about his punishment (10 years priosn, of which he did 8.5).

Anastasia, wrote for the the Novaya Gazeta newspaper, but most of all she was an anarchist activist. She was shot when she tried to intervene after Markelov was shot. She was taken to a hospital and has died from her wounds. Anastasia was working on informal youth movements, in particular was following information on neo-nazis. In particular, Anastasia's material on the verdict issued to leader of the right-radical grouping “Format 18” Maxim Marcinkiewicz came out in No.4 of “Novaya gazeta”.

"Lawyer Stanislav Markelov was killed near building No. 1 on Prechistenka Street. Documents bearing his name were found on the body," Anatoly Bagmet, an official with the Prosecutor General's office, told journalists.
Budanov, who commanded a tank regiment during the second military campaign in Chechnya, was convicted in the summer of 2003 of strangling an 18-year-old Chechen woman three years earlier and was sentenced to 10 years in jail. He was paroled earlier this month.
Elsa Kungayeva's family had appealed against Budanov's early release, but a court rejected their plea last Thursday just hours after the former officer was released.
A source in the law enforcement bodies said earlier that Markelov was shot dead from a gun with silencer at around 2 p.m. Moscow time (11:00 GMT) near the Kropotkinskaya metro station in Moscow downtown.
"An assailant ran from behind to Markelov and a woman escorting him, Anastasia Baburova, and shot him in the back of the head from point-blank range. The woman tried to get hold of the suspect, but he shot her too," the source said.
Police said earlier that one man was killed and two more seriously wounded after an unknown suspect opened fire on them.

"Budanov and his gang are behind it. Markelov told me last Thursday he was being threatened with death if he didn't drop Budanov's case," he adds. "As soon as the murderer Budanov got out of prison, they killed this man, this professional Markelov."

"This was a person close to me. What is especially tragic is that this was a young person. Tomorrow we in conjunction with «Memorial» are conducting an action of memory for the slain lawyer. Stanislav literally dodged bullets in our country: he led cases in Chechnya, cases against nazis, was the lawyer for the family of the young Chechen woman killed by Budanov... The nazis threatened him openly, on their websites were hanging threats to his address. I reminded him about precautionary measures, but what could he do?.. They killed the person, as is said, at the battle station."
Stanislav's colleague, the lawyer Mikhail Trepashkin:
"This murder proves yet again that in our country it is dangerous to be a defender of the rights of people, if the opposite side is - the state or people near to it. The state clearly sympathized with both the Nazis and Budanov. And against lawyers who defend the rights of people, especially if these rights are violated by state organs or law-enforcement organs, at times are applied even such measures as arrest, the initiation of fabricated cases. For a long time already, there is talk about the creation in Russia of a special structure for the protection of lawyers. We see that certain lawyers are already afraid to take part in the defense of politically motivated criminal cases."
